Low Energy-Loss, High Firmness, Temperature Sensitive Polyurethane Foams

US Patent:
6653363, Nov 25, 2003
Filed:
Dec 4, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/309799
Inventors:
Chiu Y. Chan - Wilmington DE
Beat Niederoest - Marlton NJ
Assignee:
Foamex, L.P. - Linwood PA
International Classification:
C08G 1828
US Classification:
521174, 521126, 521128, 521130, 521137, 521170
Abstract:
Foaming a polyurethane foam at above atmospheric pressure conditions using a mixture of polyisocyanate and a specific mixture of low molecular weight (high OH number) polyether and graft polyols produces viscoelastic foams with high firmness, low energy losses and high temperature sensitivity such that firmness is reduced by at least 25% when the foam is heated from room temperature (e. g. , about 70Â F. (21Â C. )) to 100Â F. (38Â C. ). The foam-forming ingredients are mixed together and foamed at controlled pressures in the range 1. 05 to 1. 5 bar (absolute), preferably 1. 1 to 1. 3 bar (absolute).

Flame Laminable Hydrophilic Ester Polyurethane Foams

US Patent:
7687139, Mar 30, 2010
Filed:
Feb 26, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/037196
Inventors:
Chiu Y. Chan - Wilmington DE, US
Sharon A. Free - Wallingford PA, US
Joshua D. Land - Media PA, US
Marc J. Albero - Springfield PA, US
Jagdish Patel - Sewell NJ, US
Assignee:
Foamex Innovations Operating Company - Media PA
International Classification:
B32B 3/00
B32B 3/26
US Classification:
4283166
Abstract:
A hydrophilic ester polyurethane foam is flame laminated to a substrate using a thin sacrificial layer, preferably a sacrificial foam layer. The sacrificial layer in the resulting laminate structure has a thickness of 1. 5 mm or less, and preferably is substantially burnt away. The resulting laminate exhibits good bond strength along its length and width without loss of liquid wicking and absorptive properties.

Flame Laminable Hydrophilic Ester Polyurethane Foams

US Patent:
2006000, Jan 12, 2006
Filed:
Jul 6, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/885481
Inventors:
Chiu Chan - Wilmington DE, US
Sharon Free - Wallingford PA, US
Joshua Land - Media PA, US
Marc Albero - Springfield PA, US
Jagdish Patel - Sewell NJ, US
William Burke - Secane PA, US
International Classification:
B32B 3/26
US Classification:
428304400
Abstract:
A hydrophilic ester polyurethane foam is flame laminated to a substrate using a thin sacrificial layer, preferably a sacrificial foam layer. The sacrificial layer in the resulting laminate structure has a thickness of 1.5 mm or less, and preferably is substantially burnt away. The resulting laminate exhibits good bond strength along its length and width without loss of liquid wicking and absorptive properties.

Lower Density, Thermoformable, Sound Absorbing Polyurethane Foams

US Patent:
2006002, Feb 9, 2006
Filed:
Aug 4, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/710811
Inventors:
David Lovell - Eddystone PA, US
Chiu Chan - Eddystone PA, US
Scott Diaczun - Linwood PA, US
Assignee:
FOAMEX L.P. - Linwood PA
International Classification:
C08G 18/00
B32B 3/26
US Classification:
428304400, 521155000
Abstract:
Polyurethane foams formed under vacuum (below atmospheric pressure) conditions using primarily graft polyether polyols reacted with primarily toluene diisocyanate have lower densities (up to 1.3 lb/ft), lower hardness (IFD=up to 50 lbs), and exhibit superb thermoformability and fire retardance while retaining good sound insulating characteristics. The foam-forming ingredients are mixed together and foamed under controlled pressures in the range 0.5 to 0.95 bar (absolute). Such foams taken alone, or in combination with a barrier layer to form a laminate, are thermoformed to create a sound insulator for a motor vehicle instrument panel.

Absorbent And/Or Filter Materials Comprising Open Cell Foams Coated With Photocatalytic Titanium Dioxide, And Methods Of Making And Using The Same

US Patent:
2008017, Jul 31, 2008
Filed:
Jan 29, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/699098
Inventors:
Chiu Y. Chan - Wilmington DE, US
Xingwu Wang - Chapel Hill NC, US
Assignee:
FOAMEX L.P. - Linwood PA
International Classification:

B01D 15/00
B01D 53/14
US Classification:
95141, 210679, 502350, 95 90
Abstract:
Filter and/or absorbent materials comprising an open cell foam having a surface, wherein the surface of the open cell foam is at least partially coated with a layer comprising photocatalytic titanium dioxide; methods for making such materials comprising: (a) providing a mixture comprising photocatalytic titanium dioxide in a binder; (b) immersing an open cell foam article in the mixture; (c) removing the article from the mixture and removing excess mixture from the article; and methods of treating gases or liquids by passing the gas or liquid through such a material wherein the material has been activated by UV radiation are described.

Customizable Mattress With Multiple Sleep Zones To Improve Spinal Alignment During Sleep

US Patent:
2022029, Sep 22, 2022
Filed:
Feb 25, 2021
Appl. No.:
17/185945
Inventors:
Chiu Chan - Wilmington DE, US
International Classification:
A47C 27/14
A47C 27/15
Abstract:
This invention includes a method to produce a customizable and user-configurable mattress foam core which comprises a plurality of transversely extended foam rods that were cut during the mattress production process. These transversely extended foam rods typically have a cross section of a convex shape, including triangles, squares, rectangles, circles, ovals and hexagons. These transversely extended foam rods can be replaced with foam rods of different firmness, creating more than 10 zones with varying firmness in each zone thus tailoring to the sleeper's needs, adjusting for their differences in height, weight, sleeping position, and comfort preference. Also, these zones together allow the user to configure the mattress for spinal alignment. The transversely extended replacement foam rods typically have cross sections that are substantially the same shape as the pre-cut foam rods, but may also be of different shape. In one embodiment, the transversely extended replacement foam rods comprises foams of two or more different firmness in the transverse direction, thus allowing the mattress to be customized for multiple users with different sleeping needs.
