Ut Detection And Sizing Method For Thin Wall Tubes

US Patent:
6772638, Aug 10, 2004
Filed:
Oct 30, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/015982
Inventors:
Russell M. Matney - Lynchburg VA
Mihai G. Pop - Lynchburg VA
Assignee:
Framatome Anp, Inc. - Lynchburg VA
International Classification:
G01N 2910
US Classification:
73627, 73622
Abstract:
A method for sizing cracks is disclosed using a combination of depth crack sizing methods to improve crack sizing accuracy for thin walled tubing and tight crack surface openings less than 0. 001 inches for cracks of any depth. The tube or plate wall can consist of a single material or multiple metallic electrodeposited or otherwise intimately bonded layers of materials with different magnetic properties and the sizing method comprises known depth sizing methods such as shear wave, time of flight and the selective use of two unique depth sizing methods designated as Mode Converted Signal (MCS) and Full Skip Normalization (FSN) which provide correction factors for the known sizing methods.

In-Situ Bwr And Pwr Crud Flake Analysis Method And Tool

US Patent:
2006022, Oct 12, 2006
Filed:
Apr 23, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/830913
Inventors:
Mihai Pop - Lynchburg VA, US
Brian Lockamon - Evington VA, US
Laurence Lamanna - Amherst VA, US
John Willse - Lynchburg VA, US
International Classification:
G21C 19/42
US Classification:
376308000
Abstract:
The invention provides a method and tool to perform an analysis of CRUD on a nuclear fuel rod. The method recites providing a nuclear fuel rod with a layer of CRUD on an exterior of the fuel rod, scraping the CRUD from the fuel rod with a CRUD scraping tool and collecting CRUD flakes from the CRUD scraping tool. The method also provides for sorting the CRUD flakes into particle fractions, and analyzing the CRUD with a scanning electron microscope, wherein the scraping tool has a blade with a rigidity that is matched to an anticipated CRUD deposit shear strength.

Method For Positive Identification Of Inner Surface And Outer Surface Of Sample Flakes

US Patent:
2008006, Mar 20, 2008
Filed:
May 26, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/441743
Inventors:
Mihai G.M. Pop - Lynchburg VA, US
John Carroll Griffith - Lynchburg VA, US
William Edward Allmon - Lynchburg VA, US
Brian Glenn Lockamon - Evington VA, US
International Classification:
G06K 9/62
US Classification:
382225
Abstract:
A method for determining the inner surface and an outer surface of a sample flake through the use of digital image photography wherein digital images of a sample flake first surface and second surface are compared to a known inner surface and known outer surface of a reference flake.

Method For Prediction Of Light Water Reactor Fuel Defects Using A Fuel Condition Index

US Patent:
2008007, Apr 3, 2008
Filed:
Jul 21, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/490959
Inventors:
Mihai G.M. Pop - Lynchburg VA, US
Brian Glenn Lockamon - Evington VA, US
International Classification:
C22F 1/18
US Classification:
148672
Abstract:
A method to assess light water reactor fuel integrity is presented having the steps of granting access in a nuclear reactor fuel pool to at least one of a discharged fuel rod and a nuclear fuel assembly, calculating an operating flux for the fuel rod, measuring a thickness of CRUD on the fuel rod, measuring a thickness of oxide on the fuel rod, calculating a maximized flux for the at least one fuel rod for a position of the one fuel rod in a nuclear reactor, calculating a maximized deposit for the fuel rod, calculating a maximized oxide thickness for the fuel rod, calculating a fuel condition index of the fuel rod, comparing the fuel condition index to an index constant, and removing the fuel rod from operation when the fuel condition index is greater than the index constant.

Nuclear Power Plant Using Nanoparticles In Emergency Systems And Related Method

US Patent:
2008021, Sep 4, 2008
Filed:
Mar 2, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/713144
Inventors:
Mihai G.M. Pop - Lynchburg VA, US
Brian Glenn Lockamon - Evington VA, US
Assignee:
AREVA NP - Paris la Defense
International Classification:
G21C 15/18
US Classification:
376282
Abstract:
A nuclear power plant with an improved cooling system using nanoparticles in solid or fluid form is provided. The nanoparticles are delivered in locations such as the cold leg accumulator and high and low pressure pumps of an emergency core cooling system. Motor driven valves and pressurization can aid in the delivery. Methods for providing the nanoparticles are also provided.

Nuclear Power Plant Using Nanoparticles In Emergency Situations And Related Method

US Patent:
2008021, Sep 11, 2008
