Abstract:
The present invention relates to a golf club head provided with a face and a body. The face has a central zone and a intermediate zone adjacent and surrounding the central zone. The central zone has a first flexural stiffness and the intermediate zone has a second flexural stiffness. The club head face is configured and dimensioned such that the first flexural stiffness is significantly greater than the second flexural stiffness such that upon ball impact with the face, the intermediate zone exhibits substantial deformation so that the central zone moves into the club head. At the same time, the central zone exhibits minimal deformation so that it moves into and out of the club head as a unit. Furthermore, the face exhibits a high coefficient of restitution.

Abstract:
Golf balls are disclosed having novel dimple patterns determined by the science of phyllotaxis. A method of packing dimples using phyllotaxis is disclosed. Phyllotactic patterns are used to determine placement of dimples on a golf ball. Preferably, a computer modeling program is used to place the dimples on the golf balls. Either two-dimensional modeling or three-dimensional modeling programs are usable. Preferably, careful consideration is given to the placement of the dimples, including a minimum distance criteria so that no two dimples will intersect. This criterion ensures that the dimples will be packed as closely as possible.

Abstract:
An improved dimple pattern for a golf ball is disclosed. The dimples may be arranged according to an Archimedean pattern. The dimples may be arranged on the golf ball such that there is no great circle about the golf ball that does not intersect a dimple. Preferred Archimedean patterns include a truncated octahedron, a great rhombcuboctahedron, a truncated dodecahedron, and a great rhombicosidodecahedron. A nonplanar parting line may be used. The parting line may include a parallel segment parallel to the true equator of the golf ball and a plurality of diverging segments that diverge and converge relative the true equator. The parallel segment may be non-collinear with the true equator. The diverging and converging parting line segments may cooperate to form areas that diverge and converge away from the true equator. The size of this area may be designed to not fully surround the biggest dimple or to minimize any undercut.
