This was for an investigative project that revealed that a development lobbyist and the city of Long Beach's top development official had taken a vacation together with their families and that the official received a free hotel room. Later - after poring over hundreds of emails obtained through a public records request - the investigation revealed that the official had lied about his knowledge of the gift both to the newspaper and to the city manager, leading to his demotion and removal from the department.
