Method And Apparatus For Eliminating Power Drainage In Power Sources Used With Starter-Generators

US Patent:
6616573, Sep 9, 2003
Filed:
Sep 21, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/960108
Inventors:
Paul W. McLeod - Martinez GA
Assignee:
Club Car, Inc. - Evans GA
International Classification:
F16H 5974
US Classification:
477 99, 290 32, 290 36 R
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for eliminating inadvertent power drain from an electrical power source coupled to a starter-generator. A multiple-position key switch and bypass rectifier configuration is implemented. The multiple-position key switch is coupled to the power source. The key switchs start terminal is coupled to a solenoid for starting, while a bypass rectifier is coupled in parallel to the solenoid to provide a circuit path for recharging the electrical power source. When either a closed-in-neutral gear shift switch is open or the key switch is in a run/accessory power position, the solenoid is de-energized. This leaves the bypass rectifier as the remaining circuit path through which the power source is recharged. The bypass rectifier allows current flow in a single direction, thereby preventing discharge of the power source.

Actuator For Vehicle Engine Throttles

US Patent:
7093580, Aug 22, 2006
Filed:
Jan 21, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/040216
Inventors:
Paul Warren McLeod - Martinez GA, US
Assignee:
Club Car, Inc. - Augusta GA
International Classification:
F02D 31/00
F02D 11/04
US Classification:
123376, 123400
Abstract:
An actuator is for a vehicle engine including a carburetor having a throttle plate moveable between a minimum open position and a maximum open position. The actuator includes an input member movably coupled with the vehicle so as to be displaceable between an initial position and a maximum displaced position. A flexible connector has a first end connected with the input member and a second end connected with the throttle plate such that movement of the input member displaces the connector to move the throttle plate between the minimum and maximum positions. A guide is configured to direct movement of the connector such that a rate of displacement of the throttle plate is varied as the input member moves between the initial and maximum positions. Preferably, the guide includes two curved guide members engageable with the connector to take up a portion thereof at an intermediate input member position.

Abstract:
A speed control system is for a vehicle having an engine including a carburetor with a throttle plate moveable between a minimum open position and a maximum open position. The speed control system includes a ground speed limiter mechanism operatively coupled with the throttle plate and configured to displace the plate toward the minimum position as ground speed of the vehicle approaches a predetermined maximum value. An engine speed limiter mechanism is operatively coupled with the throttle plate and is configured to displace the plate toward the minimum position as a speed of the engine approaches a predetermined maximum value. Preferably, a control linkage is connected with the throttle plate and is moveable between a first configuration, at which the throttle plate is disposed at the minimum position, and a second configuration at which the throttle plate is disposed at the maximum position, the two limiter mechanisms displacing the linkage.

Control And Diagnostics System And Method For Vehicles

Appl. No.:
10/508046
Inventors:
Paul W. McLeod - Martinez GA, US
Kenneth McClymonds - Augusta GA, US
George T. Hummert - Aiken SC, US
Norman R. Padgett - Evans GA, US
Russell King - Evans GA, US
Assignee:
Club Car, Inc. - Evans GA
International Classification:
G06F 9/50
H02J 7/00
G06F 7/00
US Classification:
701 22, 701 29, 701 33, 320137, 320109, 320138, 705 8, 705 10, 705 13
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for a remote diagnostic system for motorized vehicles. Apparatus according to this aspect of the invention includes a base station having a processor associated with a transceiver and a remote unit installed in a vehicle. The remote unit includes a controller associated with a transceiver, where the controller gathers diagnostic data. The remote unit controller transmits a vehicle identification signal in conjunction with diagnostic data to the base station transceiver such that the base station processor monitors the diagnostic data for the vehicle. Another aspect of the invention further includes a mapping processor associated with a memory. The memory stores a virtual map of a local operating area having areas that are allowable and restricted. The controller is coupled to the mapping processor and a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver is coupled to the mapping processor. The GPS receiver determines a current vehicle location and the mapping processor correlates the current vehicle location to a corresponding location on the virtual map.

Discharge Ignition Apparatus For Internal Combustion Engine Having Shut-Off Feature

US Patent:
5829421, Nov 3, 1998
Filed:
Jun 27, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/883943
Inventors:
Paul W. McLeod - Warrenville SC
Assignee:
R. E. Phelon Co., Inc. - Aiken SC
International Classification:
F02F 100
US Classification:
123599
Abstract:
An improved capacitive discharge ignition apparatus includes disable circuitry for permitting shut-off of the engine. The disable circuitry is operative to gate the discharge SCR, thereby shorting current that would otherwise charge the storage capacitor. A portion of the charging current is diverted through a transistor to the SCR gate. The transistor is rendered conductive for a predetermined time by a RC circuit connected to its base. The RC circuit is charged by momentary contact of a user-actuated switch. The time constant of the RC circuit is preferably selected to achieve engine stoppage under any anticipated operating conditions.

Discharge Ignition Apparatus For Internal Combustion Engine Having Shut-Off Feature

US Patent:
5855199, Jan 5, 1999
Filed:
Jun 25, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/882359
Inventors:
Paul W. McLeod - Warrenville SC
Assignee:
R.E. Phelon Co., Inc. - Aiken SC
International Classification:
F02P 1100
F02B 7708
US Classification:
123599
Abstract:
An improved capacitive discharge ignition apparatus includes disable circuitry for permitting shut-off of the engine. The disable circuitry includes a SCR and a transistor in series to provide a bypass for current that would otherwise charge the ignition capacitor. The SCR is gated by a RC circuit charged by momentary contact of a user-actuated switch. The transistor is rendered conductive only during periods when a positive voltage is induced on the charge coil, thereby limiting discharge of the RC circuit. In addition, the RC circuit is regeneratively charged by a leakage current through the SCR gate. The disable circuitry thus achieves engine stoppage regardless of the time required.
