Abstract:
A freeze-stable liquid blood control standard and method is provided for the quality control of the measurement of blood pH and gases in the clinical laboratory. The blood control standard comprises a sealed receptacle containing specially treated red cells and a gaseous head space at least equal to about the volume of the red cells. The special treatment comprises thorough washing and separating the red cells from the plasma components and mild treatment with aldehyde, slow admixture with lower aliphatic diol or triol, and retention in a buffered solution. The special treatment optionally includes treating at least a portion of the red cells with carbon monoxide. The head space comprises from 0-15% CO. sub. 2, 0-25% O. sub. 2 and the balance N. sub.

There is disclosed a synthetic liquid control standard for use in the quality assurance of blood gas instrumentation systems which comprises an aqueous solution of a dye buffered to a pH of from about 7. 1 to about 7. 7 and containing sufficient bicarbonate ion to provide a pCO. sub. 2 of from about 20 to about 80, ethylene glycol to provide a viscosity of from about 3 to about 9 centipoises and gaseous oxygen to provide a pO. sub. 2 of from about 50 to about 400 retained in a sealed receptacle.

Abstract:
A hematology control is disclosed which is useful for clinical hematology procedures and, in particular, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) determinations. The hematology control comprises an aqueous suspension of red blood cells in which varying levels of MCV are provided by applying to the red cell component, after light treatment with aldehyde, an osmotic pressure that is directly proportional to the desired red blood cell size.
