Freeze-Stable Liquid Blood Control Standard

US Patent:
4199471, Apr 22, 1980
Filed:
Nov 16, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/961184
Inventors:
Allan L. Louderback - Temple City CA
Paul R. Szatkowski - Bethel CT
International Classification:
G01N 3316
US Classification:
252408
Abstract:
A freeze-stable liquid blood control standard and method is provided for the quality control of the measurement of blood pH and gases in the clinical laboratory. The blood control standard comprises a sealed receptacle containing specially treated red cells and a gaseous head space at least equal to about the volume of the red cells. The special treatment comprises thorough washing and separating the red cells from the plasma components and mild treatment with aldehyde, slow admixture with lower aliphatic diol or triol, and retention in a buffered solution. The special treatment optionally includes treating at least a portion of the red cells with carbon monoxide. The head space comprises from 0-15% CO. sub. 2, 0-25% O. sub. 2 and the balance N. sub.

Urobilinogen Control

US Patent:
4703013, Oct 27, 1987
Filed:
Mar 23, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/029526
Inventors:
Allan L. Louderback - Temple City CA
Paul R. Szatkowski - Bethel CT
International Classification:
G01N 3100
US Classification:
436 12
Abstract:
A stable control solution is provided for the determination of urobilinogen. The control solution comprises an aqueous solution of about 3-12% ethylene glycol, about 0. 1% protein and preferably about 40-400 mg/dl urobilinogen, said composition buffered to pH about 8. 0-9. 0 and retained in a hermetically sealed container under a blanket of inert gas.

Blood Gas Control

US Patent:
4279775, Jul 21, 1981
Filed:
Dec 31, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/108480
Inventors:
Allan L. Louderback - Temple City CA
Paul R. Szatkowski - Bethel CT
International Classification:
G01N 3348
US Classification:
252408
Abstract:
There is disclosed a synthetic liquid control standard for use in the quality assurance of blood gas instrumentation systems which comprises an aqueous solution of a dye buffered to a pH of from about 7. 1 to about 7. 7 and containing sufficient bicarbonate ion to provide a pCO. sub. 2 of from about 20 to about 80, ethylene glycol to provide a viscosity of from about 3 to about 9 centipoises and gaseous oxygen to provide a pO. sub. 2 of from about 50 to about 400 retained in a sealed receptacle.

Blood Biochemistry Control Standard

US Patent:
4324687, Apr 13, 1982
Filed:
Jun 23, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/162065
Inventors:
Allan L. Louderback - Temple City CA
Paul R. Szatkowski - Bethel CT
International Classification:
G01N 3348
C09K 300
US Classification:
252408
Abstract:
A blood biochemistry control standard for the quality control of the analytical measurement of blood biochemistry components is disclosed. The control standard comprises an aqueous suspension of red blood cells which have been stabilized by mild treatment with aldehyde and saline and then slowly equilibrated with at least one additionally incorporated non-gaseous biochemical analyte in a concentration of clinical significance.

Hematology Control

US Patent:
4579824, Apr 1, 1986
Filed:
May 18, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/495629
Inventors:
Allan L. Louderback - Temple City CA
Paul Szatkowski - Bethel CT
International Classification:
G01N 3100
G01N 3300
US Classification:
436 10
Abstract:
A hematology control is disclosed which is useful for clinical hematology procedures and, in particular, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) determinations. The hematology control comprises an aqueous suspension of red blood cells in which varying levels of MCV are provided by applying to the red cell component, after light treatment with aldehyde, an osmotic pressure that is directly proportional to the desired red blood cell size.
