Lubricants Or Lubricant Additives Composed Of Ionic Liquids Containing Ammonium Cations

US Patent:
7754664, Jul 13, 2010
Filed:
Sep 19, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/533098
Inventors:
Jun Qu - Knoxville TN, US
Sheng Dai - Knoxville TN, US
Huimin Luo - Knoxville TN, US
Peter J. Blau - Knoxville TN, US
Assignee:
UT-Battelle, LLC - Oak Ridge TN
University of Tennessee Research Foundation - Knoxville TN
International Classification:
C10M 135/08
C10M 133/06
US Classification:
508547, 508548
Abstract:
A lubricant or lubricant additive is an ionic liquid alkylammonium salt. The alkylammonium salt has the structure RNH,[FC(CF)S(O)]N where x is 1 to 3, R is independently Cto Cstraight chain alkyl, branched chain alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkyl substituted cycloalkyl, cycloalkyl substituted alkyl, or, optionally, when x is greater than 1, two R groups comprise a cyclic structure including the nitrogen atom and 4 to 12 carbon atoms, and y is independently 0 to 11. The lubricant is effective for the lubrication of many surfaces including aluminum and ceramics surfaces.

Titanium Aluminide Intermetallic Alloys With Improved Wear Resistance

US Patent:
2010025, Oct 7, 2010
Filed:
Apr 1, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/416323
Inventors:
Jun Qu - Knoxville TN, US
Peter J. Blau - Knoxville TN, US
Vinod K. Sikka - Oak Ridge TN, US
Assignee:
UT-BATTELLE, LLC - Oak Ridge TN
International Classification:
C23C 8/10
C22C 14/00
C22C 30/00
US Classification:
148281, 148421
Abstract:
The invention is directed to a method for producing a titanium aluminide intermetallic alloy composition having an improved wear resistance, the method comprising heating a titanium aluminide intermetallic alloy material in an oxygen-containing environment at a temperature and for a time sufficient to produce a top oxide layer and underlying oxygen-diffused layer, followed by removal of the top oxide layer such that the oxygen-diffused layer is exposed. The invention is also directed to the resulting oxygen-diffused titanium aluminide intermetallic alloy, as well as mechanical components or devices containing the improved alloy composition.

Ion Beam Sputter Target And Method Of Manufacture

US Patent:
2011029, Dec 8, 2011
Filed:
Jun 2, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/792324
Inventors:
Clifton Higdon - Birmingham MI, US
Alaa A. Elmoursi - Troy MI, US
Jason Goldsmith - Meadville PA, US
Bruce Cook - Ankeny IA, US
Peter Blau - Knoxville TN, US
Qu Jun - Knoxville TN, US
Robert Milner - Warren MI, US
International Classification:
C23C 14/34
B32B 38/00
US Classification:
20429813, 20429812, 156 8911
Abstract:
A target for use in an ion beam sputtering apparatus made of at least two target tiles where at least two of the target tiles are made of different chemical compositions and are mounted on a main tile and geometrically arranged on the main tile to yield a desired chemical composition on a sputtered substrate. In an alternate embodiment, the tiles are of varied thickness according to the desired chemical properties of the sputtered film. In yet another alternate embodiment, the target is comprised of plugs pressed in a green state which are disposed in cavities formed in a main tile also formed in a green state and the assembly can then be compacted and then sintered.

Cvd Method Of Forming Self-Lubricating Composites

US Patent:
5843533, Dec 1, 1998
Filed:
Sep 29, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/537050
Inventors:
Theodore M. Besmann - Oak Ridge TN
Peter J. Blau - Oak Ridge TN
Woo Y. Lee - Knoxville TN
Yong W. Bae - Oak Ridge TN
Assignee:
Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, Inc. - Oak Ridge TN
International Classification:
C23C 1600
US Classification:
4272552
Abstract:
An article having a multiphase composite lubricant coating of a hard refractory matrix phase of titanium nitride dispersed with particles of a solid lubricating phase of molybdenum disulfide is prepared by heating the article to temperatures between 350. degree. and 850. degree. C. in a reaction vessel at a reduced pressure and passing a gaseous mixture of Ti((CH. sub. 3). sub. 2 N). sub. 4, MoF. sub. 6, H. sub. 2 S and NH. sub. 3 over the heated article forming a multiphase composite lubricant coating on the article.

Scanning Micro-Sclerometer

US Patent:
5359879, Nov 1, 1994
Filed:
Nov 4, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/971175
Inventors:
Warren C. Oliver - Knoxville TN
Peter J. Blau - Oak Ridge TN
Assignee:
Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc. - Oak Ridge TN
International Classification:
G01N 346
G01N 356
US Classification:
73 7
Abstract:
A scanning micro-sclerometer measures changes in contact stiffness and correlates these changes to characteristics of a scratch. A known force is applied to a contact junction between two bodies and a technique employing an oscillating force is used to generate the contact stiffness between the two bodies. As the two bodies slide relative to each other, the contact stiffness changes. The change is measured to characterize the scratch.
