Devices And Methods For The Treatment Of Spinal Disorders

US Patent:
6402750, Jun 11, 2002
Filed:
Apr 4, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/542972
Inventors:
Robert E. Atkinson - Falcon Heights MN
Peter T. Keith - Saint Paul MN
Assignee:
SpinLabs, LLC - Stillwater MN
International Classification:
A61B 1770
US Classification:
606 61, 623 1716
Abstract:
Devices and methods for treating a damaged intervertebral disc to reduce or eliminate associated back pain. Dynamic bias devices and reinforcement devices are disclosed, which may be used individually or in combination, to eliminate nerve impingement associated with the damaged disc, and/or to reinforce the damaged disc, while permitting relative movement of the vertebrae adjacent the damaged disc.

Method And Apparatus For Catheter Exchange By Guide Wire-Captivation

US Patent:
6443912, Sep 3, 2002
Filed:
Nov 8, 1991
Appl. No.:
07/789183
Inventors:
Christian L. Mazzola - Mika MN
Peter T. Keith - Fridley MN
Daniel O. Adams - Orono MN
Assignee:
SciMed Life Systems, Inc. - Maple Grove MN
International Classification:
A61M 2902
US Classification:
600585, 60410304, 606194
Abstract:
An apparatus for exchanging over-the-wire balloon catheters engages a guide wire within a guide catheter. In one embodiment the engagement is by an inflatable balloon in the guide catheter. Alternatively, the engagement is accomplished by a captivation wire in the guide catheter that has a collapsible loop portion through which the guide wire extends. Inflation of the balloon or closing the loop portion of the captivation wire within the guide catheter traps the guide wire and restricts its movement relative to the guide catheter. Once the guide wire position is fixed, withdrawal of a first balloon catheter and subsequent introduction of a second balloon catheter over the guide wire is possible without moving the guide wire longitudinally. Thus, the positioning of the guide wire over a stenosis to be dilated is not disturbed.

Devices And Methods For The Treatment Of Spinal Disorders

US Patent:
6579291, Jun 17, 2003
Filed:
Oct 10, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/685401
Inventors:
Peter T. Keith - Saint Paul MN
Robert E. Atkinson - Falcon Heights MN
Assignee:
Spinalabs, LLC - Stillwater MN
International Classification:
A61B 1770
US Classification:
606 61, 128898
Abstract:
Devices and methods for treating a damaged intervertebral disc to reduce or eliminate associated back pain. The present invention provides disc reinforcement therapy (DRT) which involves implanting one or more reinforcement members in the annulus of the disc. The reinforcement members may be used to stabilize the annulus and/or compresses a portion of the annulus so as to reduce a bulge and/or close a fissure.

Devices And Methods For The Treatment Of Spinal Disorders

US Patent:
6689125, Feb 10, 2004
Filed:
Jan 22, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/055780
Inventors:
Peter T. Keith - Saint Paul MN
Robert E. Atkinson - Stillwater MN
Assignee:
Spinalabs, LLC - MN
International Classification:
A61B 1804
US Classification:
606 32, 607 96, 607 99
Abstract:
Devices and methods for treating a damaged intervertebral disc to reduce or eliminate associated back pain. The present invention provides disc reinforcement therapy (DRT) which involves implanting one or more reinforcement members in and preferably around the annulus of the disc. The reinforcement members may be used to stabilize the annulus and/or compresses a portion of the annulus so as to reduce a bulge and/or close a fissure.

Balloon Catheter With Distal Guide Wire Lumen

US Patent:
6733487, May 11, 2004
Filed:
Jun 21, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/886328
Inventors:
Peter T. Keith - Fridley MN
Charles L. Euteneuer - St. Michael MN
Assignee:
SciMed Life Systems, Inc. - Maple Grove MN
International Classification:
A61M 2500
US Classification:
604526, 604524, 60410309, 60410304, 60410201, 60410202
Abstract:
An over-the-wire balloon dilatation catheter has a stainless steel hypotube catheter shaft, an intermediate sleeve section bonded to the shaft and a distal balloon section connected to the sleeve section. The sleeve section is forced from relatively flexible polymer materials and includes an inner core tube which defines a guide wire lumen extending only through a distal portion of the catheter (including its sleeve and balloon sections) to facilitate fast balloon catheter exchanges. A distal end of the hypotube shaft is crimped laterally and the core tube is nested and bonded within the crimp to provide a proximal outlet for the guide wire lumen. The hypotube shaft provides an inflation lumen for the balloon, with the inflation lumen being continued as an annular inflation lumen through the sleeve section where an outer sleeve is bonded about the core tube and extends from the distal end of the hypotube shaft to the balloon section. A kink-resistant coil structure extends distally from the distal end of the hypotube shaft to provide a gradual change in stiffness along the length of the catheter from the relatively stiff hypotube shaft to the relatively flexible distal portion of the catheter.

Devices And Methods For Cerebral Perfusion Augmentation

US Patent:
6848448, Feb 1, 2005
Filed:
Jan 23, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/057252
Inventors:
Jon P. St. Germain - Maple Grove MN, US
Peter T. Keith - Maple Grove MN, US
Denise R. Barbut - New York NY, US
Steven W. Berhow - Maple Grove MN, US
Joel R. Munsinger - Maple Grove MN, US

CoAxia, Inc. - Maple Grove MN
International Classification:
A61B 1900
US Classification:
128898, 606194
Abstract:
Methods are provided for cerebral perfusion augmentation in patients suffering from global or focal cerebral ischemia. Methods include partial or complete obstruction of the femoral or iliac arteries or the inferior vena cava, external compression of the iliac, femoral, or brachial arteries, placing the patient in a trendelenberg position, applying one or more compression members to the extremities, or removing portion(s) of cerebral spinal fluid. Partial obstruction of a vessel can be accomplished by a device comprising an elongate catheter and a distally mounted expandable member. The expandable member may comprise one or two balloons. Other medical devices, such as an angioplasty, stent, or atherectomy catheter, can be inserted distal the expandable member to provide additional therapeutic intervention.

Device And Method For Treatment Of Sinusitis

US Patent:
7678099, Mar 16, 2010
Filed:
Feb 23, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/391129
Inventors:
Thomas V. Ressemann - St. Cloud MN, US
Peter T. Keith - Lanesboro MN, US
Theodore O. Truitt - St. Cloud MN, US

A61M 31/00
A61M 29/00
US Classification:
604510, 606196
Abstract:
A method for treating a natural drainage passageway in a subject includes forming a cannulated artificial passageway into a subject's sinus cavity through the canine fossa region with a piercing member, the piercing member containing a hollow cannula thereon, the cannula comprising an elongate flexible member having a lumen passing therethrough. The piercing member is removed so as to leave the cannula in place. A balloon dilation catheter is then advanced within the lumen of the cannula so as to place the dilation balloon at least partially across the natural drainage passage in the sinus cavity. The dilation balloon is dilated so as to at least partially expand the natural drainage passageway.
