Adaptive Lookup Table: A Graphical Simulation Component For Recursively Updating Numeric Data Stored In Table Form

US Patent:
7139687, Nov 21, 2006
Filed:
Dec 31, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/036675
Inventors:
Bora Eryilmaz - Boston MA, US
Pascal Gahinet - Hopkinton MA, US
Peter Maloney - Dearborn MI, US
Zhiping You - Natick MA, US
Assignee:
The Mathworks, Inc. - Natick MA
International Classification:
G06F 7/70
US Classification:
703 2, 715763
Abstract:
A graphical block that defines the functionality of a lookup table and can be used in a block diagram model to capture time-varying characteristics of a system's behavior in the lookup table is presented. The block uses input and output data of the system to dynamically create and update the contents of the underlying lookup table over time. More specifically, the block utilizes an adaptation process that uses the system (or plant) output data to recompute the table values. The adaptation process is implemented as a statistical and signal processing algorithm, such as Recursive Sample Means (RSM), Least Mean Squares (LMS) and Recursive Least-Squares (RLS). The adaptation can be cell-based or point based.

Adaptive Lookup Table: A Graphical Simulation Component For Recursively Updating Numeric Data Storage In Table Form

US Patent:
8024164, Sep 20, 2011
Filed:
Aug 20, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/842027
Inventors:
Bora Eryilmaz - Boston MA, US
Pascal Gahinet - Hopkinton MA, US
Peter Maloney - Dearborn MI, US
Zhiping You - Natick MA, US
Assignee:
The Math Works, Inc. - Natick MA
International Classification:
G06G 7/48
US Classification:
703 6
Abstract:
A system may include a memory to store a graphical block diagram model including a graphical block, the graphical block being associated with a lookup table and one or more inputs for receiving input data. The system may further include one or more processors to update data stored in the lookup table based on the received input data, where data stored in the lookup table includes data for simulating an embedded control system.

System For Continuously Guided Drilling

US Patent:
5314030, May 24, 1994
Filed:
Aug 12, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/928935
Inventors:
Carl R. Peterson - Boxford MA
Peter J. Maloney - Inkster MI
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
E21B 708
E21B 47024
US Classification:
175 26
Abstract:
The invention provides a system for precisely guiding the direction of a drill bit. The drill shaft has an orientation sensor that detects deviation of the drilling direction from the desired direction; the drill bit is steerable by preferentially directing flushing fluid at the drilling end; and a fluid modulation means controls the flushing in response to a signal from the orientation sensor. The invention also provides a tiltmeter for detecting deviation from vertical of the axis of rotation of a rotating shaft. A gravity-driven mechanical oscillator, for instance a pendulum, is carried by the rotating shaft, and has a natural oscillation frequency matched to the rotational frequency of the shaft; and a sensor determines the phase relationship of the oscillator relative to the angular position of the shaft, thereby producing a signal indicating the deviation of the shaft from vertical.

Linear Power Amplifier For High Efficiency Multi-Carrier Performance

US Patent:
5568086, Oct 22, 1996
Filed:
May 25, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/450055
Inventors:
Jack J. Schuss - Newton MA
Peter R. Maloney - Norwood MA
David M. Upton - Mont Vernon NH
Robert J. McMorrow - Lincoln MA
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H03F 368
H03F 136
US Classification:
330124R
Abstract:
A Doherty-type power amplifier suitable for satellite telecommunication systems provides linear amplification of noise-like RF signals that have multiple carriers spread over a large instantaneous bandwidth. Efficiencies of 40% to 50% are achieved using PHEMT devices. The power amplifier includes a carrier amplifier that operates a low power levels and a peak amplifier that operates at high power levels. For low power levels, the carrier amplifier delivers its output into twice the optimum load resulting in high efficiency, while the peak amplifier is turned off. At high power levels, both the carrier and the peak amplifier is working into an optimum load and maximum power is delivered. Output matching sections are used to transform the very low optimum load impedance of the PHEMT devices prior to phase shifting and combining.
