Closure Button/Panel Energy Enhancement

US Patent:
5119962, Jun 9, 1992
Filed:
Oct 12, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/597879
Inventors:
Peter A. Vercillo - Hinsdale IL
Joseph J. Janisch - Arlington Heights IL
Anthony J. Pfeiffer - Chicago IL
Assignee:
Continental White Cap, Inc. - Downers Grove IL
International Classification:
B65D 4104
US Classification:
215230
Abstract:
This relates to a closure cap having an end panel which is equipped with a central button or panel area so as to cause deflection, either by way of a vacuum within an associated container or by mechanical action when a container is closed. Recently, there has been developed a desire for a louder popping noise when the closure is removed. Also there has been developed tamper indicating indicia elements to be actuated by the button or panel area to irreversibly indicate that a container has been opened even though the closure cap has been reapplied. A need for a greater stored energy in the button or panel area has been found and such additional stored energy is obtained by utilizing faceted areas or portions.

Container Neck Finish Configuration For Improved Tamper Evident Band Breakage Upon Removal Of Associated Closure

US Patent:
4936474, Jun 26, 1990
Filed:
Feb 24, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/314959
Inventors:
Dennis A. Szczesniak - Palos Hills IL
Peter A. Vercillo - Hinsdale IL
Assignee:
Continental White Cap, Inc. - Norwalk CT
International Classification:
B65D 5502
US Classification:
215252
Abstract:
This relates to an improved container tamper evident bead and neck finish arrangement which provides improved tamper evident band breakage upon removal of an associated closure. Most specifically, beneath the customary retaining bead, a container neck finish is of corrugated or scalloped configuration and is of a size whereby the tamper evident band or a retaining bead thereof is stretched across the space defined by a groove between two adjacent ribs so as to provide for a degree of interlock between the stretched tamper band and the container neck finish such that the tamper evident band is restrained against rotation with the remainder of the closure when the closure is rotated to effect removal thereof. This provides for a much quicker and more reliable breaking of the webs joining the tamper evident band to the closure skirt.

Closure Having Improved Sealant Channel For Receiving Sealant By Spin Lining

US Patent:
4938371, Jul 3, 1990
Filed:
May 19, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/354294
Inventors:
Peter A. Vercillo - Hinsdale IL
Assignee:
Continental White Cap, Inc. - Norwalk CT
International Classification:
B65D 5306
US Classification:
215352
Abstract:
This relates to a closure combination which includes the closure being formed with a sealant channel to which there is applied by spin lining a plastisol type compound sealant, or the like. It is preferred, from an economy standpoint, to utilize a minimal amount of the sealant while providing the necessary sealing surface between a container neck finish and the sealant. Since the sealant is applied by a spin lining process during which the closure is rapidly rotated, the sealant is thrown radially outwardly by centrifugal force. However, the viscosity of the sealant normally is such as to prevent it from being returned to a level-flat condition. It has been found that by modifying the sealant channel configuration, particularly the slope of the base wall thereof, depending upon the viscosity of the sealant, one can selectively obtain a uniform thickness sealant application or a flat top sealant application. Further, by sloping the end seal surface of the container to which the closure combination is to be applied, one can obtain extra beneficial results. It is also desirable to provide a dam arrangement for the sealant which permits return overflow of the sealant with the dam accommodating the overflowing sealant.

Vacuum-Tamper Indicating Button For Smaller Diameter Caps And The Like

US Patent:
4533059, Aug 6, 1985
Filed:
Jun 13, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/620304
Inventors:
William J. Kapolas - Mt. Prospect IL
Peter A. Vercillo - Hinsdale IL
Daniel Dowling - Chicago IL
George S. Beatovic - Chicago IL
Oscar N. Clifton - Schaumburg IL
Ronald Gatz - Park Ridge IL
Eugene W. Harford - Chicago IL
Chester Wilczenski - Lombard IL
John Dobbs - Des Plaines IL
Ronald Kowalczyk - Chicago IL
Derek G. Owen - Bensenville IL
John N. Banich - Chicago IL
Assignee:
Continental White Cap, Inc. - Northbrook IL
International Classification:
G01L 1912
US Classification:
215230
Abstract:
This relates to a closure cap for containers wherein the end wall of the closure cap and more particularly an end panel thereof may be subjected to a vacuum which will determine the condition within the container. The closure cap involved is of a small diameter and is specifically intended for use in conjunction with neck finishes having diameters ranging from 27 mm to 43 mm. The end panel of the closure cap is of a specific configuration so that a small diameter central portion in the form of a button will evert under the existing vacuum conditions so as to present a substantially plain end panel when the vacuum condition exists within the container and which will show a popped up button when the vacuum has been relieved. The button will be indicative of product condition or possible tampering.

Composite Cap Including Tamper Indicating Feature

US Patent:
4989740, Feb 5, 1991
Filed:
Mar 7, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/489533
Inventors:
Peter A. Vercillo - Hinsdale IL
Assignee:
Continental White Cap, Inc. - Norwalk CT
International Classification:
B65D 4134
US Classification:
215252
Abstract:
This relates to a composite closure which incorporates the conventional closure of the press-on, twist-off type including a metal shell having in the center of an end panel thereof a tamper indicating button. The composite closure includes an overcap which is frictionally interlocked with the shell and wherein the shell has been modified so that the curl at the lower edge of the skirt thereof is outturned as opposed to being inturned and the rougher coating for receiving the sealing compound increases the frictional connection between the overcap and the metal shell. In addition, the overcap is provided with a tamper indicating band which is interlocked with the container finish so as to prevent both axial upward movement and circumferential movement of the tamper indicating band relative to the container finish. This permits, with controlled tolerances, an interlocking relation between the composite closure and the container wherein when the composite closure is twisted to removed the same the tamper indicating band will be first released and thereafter the seal between the closure and the container is broken and the tamper indicating button will pop-up in a normal manner.
