Methods For Completing Wells In Unconsolidated Subterranean Zones

US Patent:
6446722, Sep 10, 2002
Filed:
Jul 27, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/361714
Inventors:
Philip D. Nguyen - Frisco TX
Ronald G. Dusterhoft - Katy TX
Assignee:
Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. - Dallas TX
International Classification:
E21B 3313
US Classification:
166278, 166281, 166236
Abstract:
Improved methods and apparatus for completing an unconsolidated subterranean zone penetrated by a well bore are provided. The methods basically comprise the steps of placing a slotted liner having an internal sand screen disposed therein in the zone, isolating the slotted liner and the well bore in the zone and injecting particulate material into the annuli between the sand screen and the slotted liner and the slotted liner and the well bore to thereby form packs of particulate material therein to prevent the migration of fines and sand with produced fluids.

Apparatus And Method For Gravel Packing An Interval Of A Wellbore

US Patent:
6557634, May 6, 2003
Filed:
Mar 6, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/800199
Inventors:
William David Henderson - Tioga TX
Stephen Lee Crow - Kingswood TX
Philip D. Nguyen - Duncan OK
Assignee:
Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. - Dallas TX
International Classification:
E21B 4304
US Classification:
166278, 166 51
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for gravel packing an interval of a wellbore is disclosed. The apparatus comprises an outer tubular ( ) forming a first annulus with the wellbore and an inner tubular ( ) disposed within the outer tubular ( ) forming a second annulus therebetween. The second annulus includes an axially extending slurry passageway ( ) and an axially extending production pathway ( ). The portion of the outer tubular ( ) adjacent the slurry passageway ( ) has an outlet ( ). The portion of both the outer and inner tubulars ( ) adjacent the production pathway ( ) has a plurality of openings ( ). The slurry passageway ( ) is in fluid isolation from the production pathway ( ) such that when a fluid slurry containing gravel is injected through the slurry passageway ( ), the fluid slurry exits through the outlet ( ) leaving gravel in the first annulus, thereby gravel packing the interval.

Apparatus And Method For Gravel Packing An Interval Of A Wellbore

US Patent:
6702018, Mar 9, 2004
Filed:
Aug 10, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/927217
Inventors:
Ronald W. McGregor - Carrollton TX
Travis T. Hailey - Sugar Land TX
William David Henderson - Tioga TX
Robert L. Crow - Irving TX
Philip D. Nguyen - Duncan OK
Assignee:
Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. - Dallas TX
International Classification:
E21B 4304
US Classification:
166278, 166227, 166 51
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for gravel packing an interval of a wellbore comprises an outer tubular ( ), which forms a first annulus with the wellbore, and an inner tubular ( ) disposed within the outer tubular ( ) forming a second annulus therebetween. Within the second annulus is an axially extending production pathway ( ) and an axially extending slurry passageway ( ), which is defined between a channel ( ) and the inner tubular ( ). The outer tubular ( ) has outlets ( ) that are substantially aligned with outlets ( ) of the channel ( ). The portions of both the outer and inner tubulars ( ) adjacent the production pathway ( ) have openings ( ). When a fluid slurry containing gravel is injected through the slurry passageway ( ), the fluid slurry exits through the outlets ( ) leaving gravel in the first annulus, thereby gravel packing the interval.

Apparatus And Method For Treating An Interval Of A Wellbore

US Patent:
6932157, Aug 23, 2005
Filed:
Mar 9, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/796467
Inventors:
Ronald W. McGregor - Carrollton TX, US
William David Henderson - Tioga TX, US
Robert W. Crow - Irving TX, US
Philip D. Nguyen - Duncan OK, US
Assignee:
Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B043/04
US Classification:
166278, 166 51, 166227
Abstract:
An apparatus () and method for treating an interval of a wellbore comprises an outer tubular () disposed within the wellbore. A sand control screen () is disposed within the outer tubular (). A slurry passageway () is formed between the sand control screen () and outer tubular (). In addition, a production pathway () is formed between the sand control screen () and outer tubular (). When the apparatus () is in an operable position, the region between the outer tubular () and the wellbore serves as a primary path for delivery of a fluid slurry, the production pathway () serves as a secondary path for delivery of the fluid slurry if the primary path becomes blocked and the slurry passageway () serves as a tertiary path for delivery of the fluid slurry if the primary and secondary paths become blocked.

Abstract:
An apparatus and method for completing an interval of a wellbore while drilling comprises a drill string () having a drill bit () mounted on the lower end thereof. A completion assembly () is positioned around a section of the drill string () such that when the wellbore () is extended by rotating the drill bit () and advancing the drill string (), the completion assembly () does not rotate. The advancement of the drill string () and rotation of the drill bit () is ceased when the completion assembly () has reached the desired interval of the wellbore (). Thereafter, the drill string () is disconnected from the drill bit () for retrieval to the surface leaving the completion assembly () and the drill bit () downhole.
