Computer Method And Apparatus For Interacting With A Physical System

US Patent:
6167353, Dec 26, 2000
Filed:
Feb 2, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/018023
Inventors:
Philippe P. Piernot - Palo Alto CA
Marcos R. Vescovi - Palo Alto CA
Adam Jordan - San Francisco CA
Chris Schmidt - Fairfax CA
Rafael Granados - Albany CA
Assignee:
Interval Research Corporation - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
G06F 300
A63F 300
US Classification:
702 94
Abstract:
A computer interface system and method is described which includes a way of interfacing with a physical game system. The game system may include a platform having a plurality of regions and a plurality of lots, a plurality of environmental objects positioned within an associated lot of the platform, and a movable object near at least one region. Additionally, each environmental object has an environmental identifier and is a global type or a local type, and each region has a region identifier and a plurality of subregions. The method includes the act of scanning the environmental objects and the movable object to extract data, where the extracted data includes a movable object position of the movable object and an environmental position for each environmental object and associated environmental identifier. The method also includes an act of determining which region is nearest to the movable object by analyzing the extracted data and computing the distance between the movable object and each region that is proximal to the movable object. Additionally the method includes an act of determining which region identifier is associated with the nearest region to the movable object by analyzing the extracted data, determining whether any of the environmental objects are associated with the nearest region by analyzing the extracted data, and determining whether any environmental identifiers are associated with the nearest region by analyzing the extracted data.

Video Camera Based Computer Input System With Interchangeable Physical Interface

US Patent:
5953686, Sep 14, 1999
Filed:
Jul 3, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/675104
Inventors:
Philippe P. Piernot - Palo Alto CA
Marcos R. Vescovi - Portola Valley CA
Jonathan R. Cohen - San Francisco CA
Rafael Granados - Berkeley CA
Golan Levin - Sunnyvale CA
Justin Willow - Stanford CA
Assignee:
Interval Research Corporation - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
G01N 2100
US Classification:
702150
Abstract:
A computer input system and method is described which includes a spatial reference member having a body with a first surface and an opposing second surface. The spatial reference member separates a first spatial region including the first surface from a second spatial region including the second surface. A physical object is movable within the first spatial region. Optical indicia tracks the physical object through the body. The optical indicia is observable from the second spatial region. An optical detector positioned in the second spatial region tracks the optical indicia and develops signals which may serve as inputs to a computer. The object may emit a signal which is tracked by the optical detector.
