Step-Shaped Innerframe For Use With Short Cigarettes And Hinged Lid Box

US Patent:
5480025, Jan 2, 1996
Filed:
Dec 6, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/161495
Inventors:
James B. Draucker - Chesterfield VA
Charles D. Hansen - Richmond VA
Reginald W. Newsome - Richmond VA
Xuan M. Pham - Richmond VA
Assignee:
Philip Morris Incorporated - New York NY
International Classification:
B65D 8510
A24F 1500
US Classification:
206246
Abstract:
Step-shaped innerframes and blanks for forming such innerframes are provided to permit shorter than conventional cigarettes to be packaged in a conventionally sized hinged lid box. A front panel is foldably connected to a substantially perpendicular step bottom panel which in turn is foldably connected to a substantially perpendicular back panel, such that the front and back panels extend in opposite directions and lie in substantially parallel planes to form an integral step configuration. When the inner frame is located within a hinged lid box, a receptacle is formed for a short cigarette bundle. A lower receptacle is defined below the step bottom panel to store discarded cigarettes which are inserted into the lower receptacle via a hole located in one of the box walls and any associated underlying innerframe panel. Preferably, the innerframe is provided with oppositely located side walls which are provided with biasing members which exert an inwardly directed force toward the cigarette bundle located within the upper receptacle to prevent cigarettes from falling as other cigarettes are removed. Suitable blanks are provided to form the step-shaped innerframes.

Package With Means For Releasing Aromatic Substance On Opening

US Patent:
4717017, Jan 5, 1988
Filed:
Mar 23, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/029210
Inventors:
Francis M. Sprinkel - Glen Allen VA
Reginald W. Newsome - Richmond VA
Assignee:
Philip Morris Incorporated - New York NY
International Classification:
A24F 1500
B65D 8510
B65D 8512
US Classification:
206264
Abstract:
A package, such as a cigarette pack, is provided with a receptacle for containing a fragrance or flavor to be released upon initial opening by the consumer. The receptacle is provided by attaching to the polymeric film circumscribing the sealed package, in the area overlying the tear tape, an additional layer of polymeric film. The fragrance or flavor is entrapped between the polymeric film and the extra polymeric layer and is released when the tear tape is pulled through the receptacle to unseal the pack. The receptacle can be provided with compartments to minimize leakage or to allow the flavor or fragrance to be kept in two or more relatively inert components which react on contact to form the fragrance or flavor or, possibly, to form a propellant to disperse the fragrance or flavor.

Assignee:
Philip Morris Incorporated - New York NY
International Classification:
B65D 8510
B65B 3530
B65B 1158
US Classification:
206256
Abstract:
A cigarette carton adapted to contain two rows of five cigarette packs per row. The carton is formed from two substantially identical cartons which are each adapted to contain one row of five cigarette packs. The two cartons are connected along their front walls, which face one another, with a joining strip which is placed over or between the tops of the front walls. The cartons are also connected along their bottom walls with a label. These connections keep the two cartons securely connected when in the ten-pack configuration so that they can be processed through standard machinery for processing ten-pack cartons, such as tax-stamping machinery. The cartons can readily be separated by a consumer for the sale of an individual five-pack carton.
