A fault detection circuit is coupled to the hot line terminal and the neutral line terminal. The fault detection circuit is configured to detect at least one fault condition and provide a fault detect signal in response thereto. An interrupting contact assembly is coupled to the fault detection circuit. A weld breaker mechanism is coupled to the interrupting contact assembly. The weld breaker mechanism is configured to strike the first pair of contacts and/or the second pair of contacts in response to the tripping stimulus.

Shuttered Receptacle For A Protective Device

US Patent:
6969801, Nov 29, 2005
Filed:
Aug 21, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/645359
Inventors:
Dejan Radosavljevic - La Fayette NY, US
Richard Weeks - Little York NY, US
Assignee:
Pass & Seymour, Inc. - Syracuse NY
International Classification:
H01R013/46
US Classification:
174 53, 174 58, 439106, 439107
Abstract:
The present invention is a protection device that is coupled to a power source in an electric power distribution system. The protection device is configured to protect a portion of the power distribution system from at least one fault condition. The device includes line terminals configured to be coupled to the power source when a proper wiring condition is effected. A receptacle member includes receptacle openings configured to accommodate plug contact blades. Receptacle contacts are disposed in the receptacle member and coupled to the line terminals. An electrical connection is established between the receptacle contacts and the line terminals. At least one protective shutter is movable between a closed position and an open position. The at least one protective shutter is disposed between the receptacle openings and the receptacle contacts in the closed position to prevent the plug blades from making contact with the receptacle contacts. A mis-wiring sensor is coupled to the line terminals.

Electrical Wiring Device With Arc Minimizer Switch Assembly And Method

US Patent:
7132616, Nov 7, 2006
Filed:
Feb 16, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/058865
Inventors:
Dejan Radosavljevic - Syracuse NY, US
Richard Weeks - Little York NY, US
Assignee:
Pass & Seymour, Inc. - Syracuse NY
International Classification:
H01H 21/00
US Classification:

By design and interaction between surfaces of the rocker assembly and the moveable contact assembly, permanent switch contact closure due to contact arc welding is avoided. A pivot member including a (moveable) contact is opened to a first contact separation distance within a given time and then to a second contact separation distance via user supplied force to a user accessible surface. A combination device is also disclosed including a circuit interrupter configured to provide power to a portion of the electrical distribution system in the closed contact position and to interrupt power from a portion of the electrical distribution system in the open contact position in response to a predetermined fault condition in the electrical distribution system. A method for opening a set of closed switch contacts in a switch assembly of an electrical device configured to provide the rated current of an AC electrical distribution system to a load is further disclosed.

Protection Device With A Sandwiched Cantilever Breaker Mechanism

US Patent:
7173799, Feb 6, 2007
Filed:
Sep 16, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/942633
Inventors:
Richard Weeks - Little York NY, US
Kent Morgan - Groton NY, US
Assignee:
Pass & Seymour, Inc. - Syracuse NY
International Classification:
H02H 3/00

The present invention is directed to an electrical wiring device that includes a plurality of line terminals, a plurality of load terminals, and a set of receptacle load terminals. The device includes a fixed contact and a first cantilever member including a first contact disposed thereon. A second cantilever member is disposed between the fixed contact and the first cantilever. The second cantilever member includes a dual contact disposed thereon. The dual contact is disposed between the fixed contact and the first contact. An actuator is configured to move between a closed position and a tripped position. The actuator is configured to urge the first cantilever toward the second cantilever to close the fixed contact, the first contact, and the dual contact such that the plurality of line terminals, the plurality of load terminals, and the set of receptacle load terminals are electrically continuous in the closed position. The actuator is also configured to release the first cantilever from the second cantilever to open the fixed contact, the first contact, and the dual contact. The plurality of line terminals, the plurality of load terminals, and the set of receptacle load terminals are decoupled in the tripped position.
