Abstract:
The present invention provides a vehicle seat belt system having a shoulder belt portion and a lap belt portion including a relay device adapted to receive a predetermined signal from a vehicle sensor, a buckle operatively attached to the relay device, a locking tongue detachably received by the buckle in operative communication with the buckle when the buckle and locking tongue are attached, a housing portion in operative communication with the buckle via the locking tongue portion with a trigger mechanism adapted to be activated in response to the predetermined signal received by the relay device, a locking structure having a belt length received therethrough actuatably engaged by the trigger mechanism, and wherein the locking structure is adapted to lock the belt length in place when the trigger mechanism is activated.

The invention is an apparatus for simulating attributes of a vehicle during a certain inertial event. The apparatus comprises a rigid shell, an occupant compartment surrounded by the rigid shell, and a carriage supporting the occupant compartment and the rigid shell. Seatbelt use is promoted by determining whether a seat is occupied and then determining whether the seatbelt associated with the seat is buckled. When the seat is occupied and unbuckled, user control of an entertainment system associated with the seat is overridden. In video-equipped entertainment systems, a video encouraging seatbelt use can be played, such as an informational video. When the seatbelt is latched, a reward audio or video clip may be played prior to allowing user control of the entertainment system.

A transportation vehicle has an inflatable restraint mounted proximate to a passenger seating location which is configured to inflate in an appropriate manner to interact with a passenger during an impact. The inflatable restraint is of a type not inflated in response to a frontal impact when the passenger seating location is empty.
