Pipe Die Method And Apparatus

US Patent:
2004020, Oct 21, 2004
Filed:
Apr 21, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/421021
Inventors:
Robert Bee - Lafayette LA, US
William Livingston - Lafayette LA, US
International Classification:
E21B019/10
US Classification:
294/102200
Abstract:
A die used in slip and elevator assemblies in oil and gas drilling operations for gripping tubular members while coupling and uncoupling joints, the die including electroless nickel plated, non-interrupted knurled teeth with a truncated pyramid shape and a dimple therein which reduces die surface penetration, thereby reducing wall loss due to die penetration, stress cracking, and carbon transfer leading to acid corrosion in oil and gas field tubular members and especially to corrosive resistive alloy tubular members.

Pipe Gripping Die

US Patent:
5971086, Oct 26, 1999
Filed:
Aug 15, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/912220
Inventors:
Robert M. Bee - Lafayette LA
William Ty Livingston - Lafayette LA
International Classification:
E21B 1907
E21B 1910
US Classification:
175423
Abstract:
A method for the construction of die members used in slips and elevators in the oil and gas industry for griping pipe. The die having nickel plated teeth with no mud grooves reduces die penetration thereby reducing stress cracking and carbon transfer in nickel alloy pipe thus reducing pipe corrosion.

System For Cleaning Threaded And Unthreaded Portions Of Tubular Members

US Patent:
5857476, Jan 12, 1999
Filed:
May 12, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/855834
Inventors:
Robert Bee - Lafayette LA
Pat Cummins - Lafayette LA
International Classification:
B08B 302
US Classification:
134167C
Abstract:
A system for cleaning both the box and pin ends of tubular members, recovery of the fluid residue, filtering of the residue to recover the heavy solids, and disposing of each of the components of the residue in an environmentally safe manner. A first housing positionable over the end of a tubular member; a first bladder expandable from the housing to seal around the outer wall of the tubular member; a plurality of jets positioned adjacent the threads of the tubular member, so that as the jets are rotated around the threads, a high pressure fluid spray cleans the threads of the member; a second bladder expandable from the end of the jetting means for sealing the inner bore of the member beyond the threads, so that all fluid jetted into the housing from the jetting nozzles is captured within the housing and flows from the housing, and no fluid flows beyond the threaded pipe end either along the inner or outer walls of the tubular member. The fluid is then collected, filtered, and the filtrate is disposed as waste water, and the filters containing the filtered solid is placed in environmentally safe sealed containers for disposal. In additional embodiments of the system, there is incorporated a sealing diaphragm as the exterior sealing member which is manually adjustable from a non-sealing to a sealing position around the wall of the pipe, and an absorption plate within the housing for absorbing impact of the end of a tubular member as it is inserted in the housing.

Method For Cleaning Threaded Portions Of Tubular Members

US Patent:
5653819, Aug 5, 1997
Filed:
Jul 29, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/681594
Inventors:
Robert Bee - Lafayette LA
Pat Cummins - Lafayette LA
International Classification:
B08B 902
US Classification:
134 10
Abstract:
A process for removing impurities from the threaded end of a tubular member by placing a housing around the end of the first end of the member, for defining a collection space between the member and the housing; sealing the bore of the member with an inflatable bladder positioned within the bore the first end of the member; sealing the space between the wall of the housing and the wall of the tubular member so that the collection space is maintained within the housing; spraying the threads of the first end of the member with a pressurized spray so that the contaminants are removed from the threads and are collected in the housing; and removing the contaminated fluid collected in the housing during the spraying process so that the contaminated fluid does not make contact with the surrounding environment.

Pipe Die Method And Apparatus

US Patent:
6079509, Jun 27, 2000
Filed:
Aug 31, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/144128
Inventors:
Robert M. Bee - Lafayette LA
William T. Livingston - Lafayette LA
International Classification:
E21B 1907
US Classification:
175423
Abstract:
A die set used in pipe tongs in the oil and gas industry for gripping pipe while threadably coupling pipe joints, the die having electroless nickel plated, non-interrupted knurled teeth having a special shape which reduces die penetration, thereby reducing wall loss due to die penetration, stress cracking and carbon transfer to oil and gas field tubular pipe and especially to corrosive resistive alloy pipe, thus further reducing pipe corrosion.
