Heart Assist Device

US Patent:
4902273, Feb 20, 1990
Filed:
Mar 22, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/171807
Inventors:
Daniel S. J. Choy - Stamford CT
Robert B. Case - New York NY
International Classification:
A61B 1900
US Classification:
600 18
Abstract:
Improved heart assist devices are disclosed. An improved heart assist device includes a catheter having a first lumen and a second lumen. An inflatable intraventricular balloon is located at the distal end of the catheter. The interior of the intraventricular balloon communicates with the first lumen of the catheter. An inflatable intraaortic balloon is located between the proximal and distal ends of the catheter. The interior of the intraaortic balloon communicates with the second lumen of the catheter. The heart assist device also includes a pumping mechanism that inflates and deflates both the intraventricular balloon and the intraaortic balloon. The improved heart assist device is inserted into the heart so that the intraventricular balloon is positioned in the left ventricle and so that the intraaortic balloon is positioned in the aorta. The intraventricular balloon is inflated during left ventricular systole, and the intraaortic balloon is deflated during left ventricular systole. The intraventricular balloon is deflated at the end of left ventricular systole or at the onset of left ventricular diastole, and the intraaortic balloon is inflated during left ventricular diastole.

Method And Apparatus For Providing Hexaxial Ecg Display

US Patent:
3983867, Oct 5, 1976
Filed:
Sep 29, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/617981
Inventors:
Robert Case - New York NY
International Classification:
A61B 504
US Classification:
128 206G
Abstract:
A 360. degree. hexaxial reference system orthogonal display of voltage versus time generated in response to heart activity is directly provided with the display having 30. degree. angular separation between adjacent electrode pair potential difference electrocardiographic sampled voltages. Both Einthoven bipolar leads and augmented V unipolar leads, each of which comprise an electrode pair, are disposed at predetermined locations with respect to the arms and legs of the body of a patient whose heart activity is to be diagnosed. Sequential selection of the electrode pairs one-by-one, from the plurality of bipolar and unipolar electrode pairs together with selective polarity reversal of the potential differences associated with the various leads for the electrode pairs is accomplished to provide the 30. degree. angular separation between adjacent electrode pair potential differences for directly providing the 360. degree. hexaxial reference system orthogonal display.
