Liquified Gas Evaporator

US Patent:
3949565, Apr 13, 1976
Filed:
Aug 9, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/496194
Inventors:
Robert N. Roop - Warminster PA
Assignee:
Fischer & Porter Co. - Warminster PA
International Classification:
F17C 702
US Classification:
62 52
Abstract:
An evaporator for converting a liquified gas such as chlorine into a superheated gas. The evaporator is constituted by a pressure vessel having a heat pipe vertically mounted therein, the lower end of the pipe projecting below the vessel and being coupled to a heat source whereby thermal energy from the source is transferred to the interior of the vessel. Liquified gas is fed into the vessel through an inlet pipe to form a pool in the lower zone thereof, in contact with the heat pipe. The gas evaporated from the heated pool is discharged through an outlet pipe.

Gravity Flow Disinfection Contactor

US Patent:
4237008, Dec 2, 1980
Filed:
Jan 11, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/002769
Inventors:
Brian Ratigan - Philadelphia PA
Karl E. Longley - San Antonio TX
Robert N. Roop - Buckingham PA
Assignee:
Fischer & Porter Co. - Warminster PA
International Classification:
C02B 118
C02B 136
US Classification:
210205
Abstract:
A gravity flow disinfectant contactor adapted to enhance contact between a disinfectant solution such as chlorine and the water to be treated to effect a more rapid and efficient disinfection activity. The contactor is constituted by a rectangular conduit having a cross-sectional diffusion plane adjacent its inlet within which is an array of evenly-spaced diffuser tubes supplied with the disinfectant solution. The tubes each have a row of equi-spaced holes drilled diametrically therethrough to produce side-by-side opposing jets of disinfectant in the diffusion plane at right angles to the cross-flowing water stream. As a consequence, the water flowing through the conduit is subjected to a dense cross fire of multiple jets of disinfectant that are uniformly distributed throughout the diffusion plane and quickly interact with the water within a relatively short downstream distance.

Corrosion-Resistant Liquified Gas Evaporator

US Patent:
4116016, Sep 26, 1978
Filed:
Mar 8, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/775524
Inventors:
Robert Roop - Doylestown PA
Carl Shine - Philadelphia PA
Assignee:
Fischer & Porter Co. - Warminster PA
International Classification:
F17C 702
US Classification:
62 52
Abstract:
An evaporator adapted to convert a liquified gas, such as chlorine, into a gas, the evaporator including an enclosed vapor chamber functioning as a pressure vessel. The vapor chamber is suspended within a water chamber having a heater serving to raise the temperature of the water to a level at which heat transfer through the wall of the vapor chamber causes the liquified gas fed therein through an inlet pipe to evaporate and produce a superheated gas that is discharged through an outlet pipe. The vapor chamber is fabricated of a steel tank whose outer surface is coated with a film of tetrafluoroethylene having a thickness just sufficient to render the film impermeable to water, thereby inhibiting corrosion of the steel surface and the formation of scale thereon, the thickness of the film being insufficient to materially reduce the heat transfer characteristics of the vapor chamber.

Enhanced Disinfection System

US Patent:
4313827, Feb 2, 1982
Filed:
Sep 4, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/184031
Inventors:
Brian J. Ratigan - Philadelphia PA
Robert N. Roop - Buckingham PA
Assignee:
Fischer & Porter Co. - Warminster PA
International Classification:
C02F 150
C02F 176
US Classification:
210136
Abstract:
A disinfectant system for intermingling a disinfectant with an effluent to be treated, such as wastewater, to kill pathogens therein, the system enhancing contact between the effluent and the disinfectant to effect a rapid and efficient disinfection action. The system includes an ejector through which a minor portion of the effluent is pumped to produce a motive fluid which induces a disinfectant therein to produce a concentrated disinfectant fluid. Th ejector terminates in a cylindrical diffuser section having a closed end and at least two circumferential series of orifices whereby the disinfectant fluid is discharged therefrom as high velocity jets which project radially with respect to the longitudinal axis of the section. The diffuser section is coaxially disposed at the inlet of a tubular mixing duct which conducts the effluent from a sump tank into a contact tank at relatively low velocity, whereby the effluent is intercepted by a radial array of jets to provide an effective mixing action in the duct in a relatively short period. Supported at the outlet of the duct is a conical baffle to define a lateral outlet therefor, causing the effluent to discharge radially from the duct into the contact tank, thereby enhacing the mixing action in the duct and maximizing the retention time in the contact tank.
