Apparatus And Method For Fabricating Cathode Collectors For Lithium/Oxyhalide Electrochemical Cells

US Patent:
7882622, Feb 8, 2011
Filed:
Dec 22, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/615369
Inventors:
Peter Polsonetti - Westwood MA, US
Mihai Albu - Westford MA, US
Moazzam Aziz - Winthrop MA, US
Robert Yetman - West Roxbury MA, US
Douglas Woodnorth - Needham MA, US
Assignee:
Electrochem Solutions, Inc. - Clarence NY
International Classification:
H01M 10/04
H01M 10/14
H01M 4/82
B05C 11/02
B23P 19/00
US Classification:
29730, 296235, 118100, 118121, 429233, 429209
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for fabricating continuous cathode collecters for use in lithium/thionyl chloride and lithium/sulfuryl chloride cells is described. The preferred electrically conductive material is acetylene black mixed with a polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE) binder in a dry, powderized form. The collector substrate is a nickel or stainless steel foil that has been expanded into a mesh or otherwise provided with perforations. A centering adjustment of the collector substrate controls loading of the electrically conductive mixture onto each side thereof. The dry, powdered electrically conductive mixture is then continuously fed into the calender and formed into a collector structure by locking to itself through the collector substrate perforations before being cut to size.

High Temperature Lithium Battery, Having Initial Low Temperature Use Capability

US Patent:
2013010, Apr 25, 2013
Filed:
Oct 20, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/277902
Inventors:
Richard J. MARSHALL - Carstairs, CA
Robert YETMAN - West Roxbury MA, US
Assignee:
Engeneered Power Services Inc. - Calgary
International Classification:
H01M 4/38
H01M 4/40
H01M 6/00
H01M 4/36
B05D 5/12
H01M 4/02
H01M 10/0563
US Classification:
429101, 429209, 42923195, 4292316, 429199, 427 77, 296231
Abstract:
A battery and method of making such battery, adapted to operate at low (typically ambient) temperatures for a short initial period and thereafter at higher temperatures. A Li—Mg alloy anode is provided, comprising up to 25% magnesium, in a liquid thionyl chloride bath which as the cathode for high temperature operation. A thin, substantially pure lithium layer is applied to a surface of the Li—Mg anode, preferably in the range of 0.0019 to 0.0025 inches (0.04826-0.0635 mm), to allow obtaining of sufficiently high power and voltage output at lower temperatures for a short period where at such lower temperatures the required voltage and power would not otherwise be available from a Li—Mg anode. Thereafter, the battery may thereafter be used in, and exposed to, higher temperatures of up to 220 C. where at such temperatures the necessary voltage and power from the remaining Li—Mg alloy anode is then available.

Terminal Assembly

US Patent:
4402567, Sep 6, 1983
Filed:
Jun 8, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/271497
Inventors:
John S. Shambaugh - Holliston MA
Robert G. Yetman - Carlisle MA
Assignee:
GTE Products Corporation - Stamford CT
International Classification:
H01R 900
H01R 1364
US Classification:
339198J
Abstract:
A terminal assembly is provided for use with an electric storage battery for making electrical output connections from the battery. The terminal assembly includes a pair of end sections to which electrical cables are connected by passing bolts through openings in lugs of the cables and advancing the bolts into corresponding threaded openings provided in metal insert terminals disposed within insulative body portions of the end sections. The end sections are constructed so that the bolts can be advanced and tightened within their associated openings only by a socket wrench, and the bolt sizes, lug sizes and openings in the lugs are selected to prevent and minimize misconnection of the cables. A separator member interposed between the end sections minimizes the possibility of the bolts being shorted together by a metal tool.

Battery Cell Module

US Patent:
4418127, Nov 29, 1983
Filed:
Nov 23, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/324348
Inventors:
John S. Shambaugh - Holliston MA
Robert G. Yetman - Carlisle MA
Hyman Zeltzer - Needham MA
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air
Force - Washington DC
International Classification:
H01M 1400
US Classification:
429 8
Abstract:
A modular lithium battery having a plurality of cells, having electrical connecting means connecting the cells to output terminals, and venting means for releasing discharge byproducts to a chemical scrubber. Stainless steel cell casings are potted in an aluminum modular case with syntactic foam and epoxy. The wall thickness resulting is about 0. 5 inches.
