Fiber Grating Environmental Sensing System

US Patent:
2003012, Jul 10, 2003
Filed:
Dec 20, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/325874
Inventors:
Eric Udd - Fairview OR, US
Sean Calvert - Troutdale OR, US
Whitten Schulz - Fairview OR, US
W. Kunzler - Gresham OR, US
M. Kunzler - Gresham OR, US
International Classification:
G01J001/04
G01J005/08
US Classification:
250/227140
Abstract:
A fiber grating environmental sensing system is described that has the ability to measure strain, vibration, humidity and water content. Fiber gratings are used to measure axial strain to accomplish these goals. An approach is described that uses matched fiber grating sensors and filters to allow for thermal compensation greatly reducing one of the key performance issues facing these systems. The system may be deployed in such applications as roadways and paved surfaces, bridges, buildings and aircraft and spacecraft. Means are described to implement transducers optimized for specific environmental measurements as well as means to demodulate the fiber grating sensors.

Shear And Pressure/Transverse Strain Fiber Grating Sensors

US Patent:
2006019, Sep 7, 2006
Filed:
Mar 4, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/071959
Inventors:
Eric Udd - Fairview OR, US
Sean Calvert - Troutdale OR, US
Stephen Kreger - Fairview OR, US
International Classification:
G01J 1/04
US Classification:
250227140
Abstract:
A fiber grating that is written into birefringent optical fiber may be placed between two loading plates and bonded in place. The principal polarization axes of the fiber grating written into birefringent optical fiber are approximately 45 degrees relative to the plane of the loading plates and utilizing spacers of a thickness approximately equal to the diameter of the fiber grating written onto birefringent fiber between the plates to measure shear. The principal polarization axes of the fiber grating written onto birefringent optical fiber at approximately 90 degrees relative to the loading plates may be used to measure pressure. When the top and bottom loading plates are of unequal size adhesive and strain relief tubes may be used in conjunction with the loading plates to provide strain relief to the shear and pressure sensors.

Fiber Grating Strain Sensors For Civil Structures

US Patent:
2005023, Oct 27, 2005
Filed:
Mar 11, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/078896
Inventors:
Sean Calvert - Trout Dale OR, US
Jason Mooney - Newberg OR, US
Eric Udd - Fairview OR, US
International Classification:
G01J001/42
US Classification:
250227140
Abstract:
A fiber grating strain sensor package that is optimized for axial strain sensitivity and usage on a civil structure that may be a bridge or building is described in this invention. Transverse strain effects are minimized and axial strain sensitivity is enhanced through the design of a substrate with an optimized geometry. These sensors have been deployed and tested on a bridge demonstrating very high sensitivity and the ability of this design to be packaged in an environmentally rugged housing necessary for a commercially successful product.
