Image Processing Method Using Phase-Shifted Fringe Patterns And Curve Fitting

US Patent:
6639685, Oct 28, 2003
Filed:
Feb 25, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/512383
Inventors:
Jie Gu - Grand Blanc MI
Simon Chin-Yu Tung - Rochester Hills MI
Gary C. Barber - Novi MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
G01B 1124
US Classification:
356603, 356604, 382286
Abstract:
A contour measurement system determines three dimensional surface information of an object using a projection moirà technique to obtain a single fringe pattern that is analyzed using a phase-shift image processing method. A grating is projected onto the object and the reflected fringe pattern is recorded by a camera and stored digitally as an array of pixels. An estimated fringe spacing is then determined for each pixel. Using the estimated fringe spacings, four phase-shifted fringe patterns are generated by correlation integration and then used in a phase calculation to obtain wrapped phase information for the object. This phase information is then unwrapped and normalized, producing a set of data points representative of the unwrapped phase information. Noise suppression using pattern reconstruction and smoothing can be utilized at this point to improve the signal to noise ratio. Thereafter, updated estimated spacings are determined for each data point using a curve fitting function such as a localized least squares fit.

Coatings For Clutch Plates

US Patent:
8101286, Jan 24, 2012
Filed:
Jun 26, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/146664
Inventors:
Simon Chin-Yu Tung - Rochester Hills MI, US
Gregory Mordukhovich - Bloomfield Hills MI, US
Assignee:
GM Global Technology Operations LLC - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B32B 15/04
F16D 13/60
F16D 69/02
US Classification:
428622, 428627, 428632, 428686, 192 7014, 192107 M
Abstract:
A multi-layer coating for a smooth contact surface of a clutch plate and a method for manufacturing the same have been developed. This coating can help reduce the prevalence of clutch shudder, noise, and plate wear that is often encountered in a friction-disc clutch mechanism found in a motor vehicle's powertrain. The multi-layer coating may comprise a relatively soft base layer and one or more relatively hard particle layers overlying the base layer. This combination of layers can help provide stable friction characteristics and thermal properties between clutch plate surfaces. One or more optional bonding layers may also be provided between any two adjacent layers to improve the adherent bonding therebetween. At least some of the layers of the multi-layer coating may be applied by a HVO/AF thermal spray procedure.

Wear Resistant Camshaft And Follower Material

US Patent:
8109247, Feb 7, 2012
Filed:
May 19, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/123062
Inventors:
Shekhar G. Wakade - Grand Blanc MI, US
Simon Chin-Yu Tung - Rochester Hills MI, US
International Classification:
F01L 1/24
F01L 1/047
US Classification:
123 9051, 123 906
Abstract:
A materials combination for a camshaft and follower of an engine valve train provides excellent wear resistance. The camshaft or camshaft lobes are made from a malleable cast iron and the cam followers are made from a carbonitrided 52100 or 4130 steel to provide excellent wear resistance equivalent to diamond-like coatings at greatly reduced cost.

Nanographene Layers And Particles And Lubricants Incorporating The Same

US Patent:
8227386, Jul 24, 2012
Filed:
Aug 18, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/543418
Inventors:
Xingcheng Xiao - Troy MI, US
Jean M. Dasch - Bloomfield Township MI, US
Simon Chin-Yu Tung - Rochester Hills MI, US
Anil K. Sachdev - Rochester Hills MI, US
Assignee:
GM Global Technology Operations LLC - Detroit MI
International Classification:
C10M 125/02
US Classification:
508113, 423448
Abstract:
A method of making at least one nanographene layer is disclosed herein. The method includes selecting X hydrocarbon precursor and Y hydrogen gas (H) such that a ratio of X/Y ranges from 0. 5 to 1, the hydrocarbon precursor including at least one of CH, CHor CH. The method further includes submitting the hydrocarbon precursor to chemical vapor deposition using the hydrogen gas and argon gas (Ar). As a result, i) the hydrocarbon precursor reacts with the hydrogen gas and argon gas (Ar) according to the following reaction:X hydrocarbon precursor+YH+ZAr→2X graphene+(Y+2X)H+ZAr,where Z ranges from 5*(X+Y) to 10*(X+Y), and ii) the hydrocarbon precursor decomposes and self-assembles to form the at least one nanographene layer.

Method Of Forming Molybdenum/Iron Phosphate Surface Coating Material

US Patent:
4828655, May 9, 1989
Filed:
Feb 18, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/157473
Inventors:
Su-Chee S. Wang - Sterling Heights MI
Simon C. Tung - Rochester MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
C25D 1100
C25D 1136
C25D 500
US Classification:
204 381
Abstract:
A method of using an electrochemical process in oil-based lubricants to form friction-reducing and wear-reducing molybdenum/iron phosphate films on cast iron surfaces. A cast iron surface acting as the anode means is first coated with a thin film of molybdenum and then bombarded with high energy inert gas ions to form a layer of molybdenum/iron alloy on the surface before the electrochemical process. An electrolytic additive of dialkyl hydrogen phosphate is added to the oil-based lubricant to improve its electrical conductance and to make it an ionic conductor. This method enables not only the formation of uniform molybdenum/iron phosphate films on cast iron surfaces but also the in situ repair of such films after damage has occurred.
