7253575, Aug 7, 2007
Filed:
Nov 8, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/983441
Inventors:
Jack Belgum - San Anselmo CA, US
Ximin Wang - Petaluma CA, US
Dale Flaming - Novato CA, US
Assignee:
Sutter Instrument Company - Novato CA
International Classification:
G05D 3/00
G03B 7/10
US Classification:
318468, 318560, 318685, 318696, 396244, 396256, 396259, 396458, 396459, 396493
Abstract:
A highly versatile optical shutter for industrial and scientific applications is disclosed. The has a aperture which defines a light path through the shutter, and a shutter vane or blade that is moved into and out of the light path using a precision, microprocessor controlled motor, such as a stepping motor. Preferably, the motor is mounted on the shutter housing using a shock absorbing material. A control unit associated with the shutter comprises the microprocessor, a motor driver, preferably one which is capable of microstepping the motor, and a non-volatile memory device, such as EEPROM, which stores a plurality of shutter control programs defining different trajectories of the shutter vane. Different programs may be used, for example, to maximize shutter speed or frequency, or to minimize vibrations.

Method And Apparatus For Precision Changing Of Micropipettes

US Patent:
2005010, May 12, 2005
Filed:
Nov 7, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/703281
Inventors:
YunGui Tang - Petaluma CA, US
Dale Flaming - Novato CA, US
Richard Ayer - Albany CA, US
Jack Belgum - San Anselmo CA, US
Frederick Siedenburg - Kentfield CA, US
International Classification:
B01L003/02
US Classification:
436183000
Abstract:
A semi-automated method of replacing micropipettes using a micromanipulator is disclosed. A first micropipette is moved at a known angle from a work position to a distal position under automatic control of the micromanipulator. A replacement micropipette is then mounted in the micromanipulator and is moved under automatic control to a position proximate to the work position. The distance between the work position and the proximate position is substantially equal to the range of manufacturing variability of the micropipettes. The second micropipette is then moved by manual control of the micromanipulator from the proximate position to the work position by moving it in a linear path along the known angle so that the final approach to the work position can be visually monitored.

Pipette Puller Using Scanning Laser

US Patent:
2012004, Mar 1, 2012
Filed:
Sep 1, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/807345
Inventors:
Jack Belgum - San Anselmo CA, US
Dale Flaming - San Rafael CA, US
Assignee:
Sutter Instrument Company - Novato CA
International Classification:
C03B 23/043
C03B 23/047
US Classification:
65108, 65271, 65158
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for pulling tubular glass, such as pipettes, is disclosed. The invention is generally directed apparatus and techniques for precisely scanning a laser beam on the selected surfaces of the glass tube to uniformly, controllably and programmably soften the tube prior to and during pulling. The invention has application to both vertical and horizontal pullers.

Optical Filter System And Method

US Patent:
2012032, Dec 20, 2012
Filed:
Jun 17, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/162904
Inventors:
Dale G. Flaming - San Rafael CA, US
Jack H. Belgum - San Anselmo CA, US
Assignee:
Sutter Instrument Company - Novato CA
International Classification:
F21V 9/00
G02B 5/22
F21V 17/02
US Classification:
362235, 362282, 362283, 359889
Abstract:
An optical system and method for illuminating an object under investigation with filtered light is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system comprises a filter wheel having a plurality of variable bandpass filters. The filter wheel is rotatable about two axis, whereby rotation about the first axis brings a selected filter in line with a collimated beam of white light and rotation about the second axis adjusts the angle of the filter relative to the light beam in order to adjust the bandpass frequencies. A second beam of white light, which may be from a second light source, can also be reflected off of the face of the filter in a manner that illuminates the object with substantially white light. In one embodiment, the object may be alternately or simultaneously illuminated with filtered light or with reflected white light. The filter can be used as a bandstop or band rejection filter to illuminate the object with white light that is missing a narrow frequency band.

Method And Apparatus For Forming A Micropipette With Uniform Application Of Heat

US Patent:
4921522, May 1, 1990
Filed:
Jul 10, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/377044
Inventors:
Dale G. Flaming - San Rafael CA
International Classification:
C03B 2311
US Classification:
65108
Abstract:
The micropipette puller of this invention includes a pair of gripping jaws that pull a length of glass tubing in opposite directions. The source of heat is a laser device and a laser beam is directed against the glass tubing between the gripping jaws and beyond the tubing into a concave mirror, which reflects that portion of the beam that bypassed the tubing, back against the back side of the tubing for uniform heating around the circumference of the tubing.

Method And Apparatus For Forming Micropipette Of Controlled Configuration By Selecting The Pattern Of Heat Application

US Patent:
4913719, Apr 3, 1990
Filed:
Jul 10, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/377045
Inventors:
Dale G. Flaming - San Rafael CA
International Classification:
C03B 2311
US Classification:
65105
Abstract:
A micropipette puller of this invention includes a pair of gripping jaws that pull a length of glass tubing in opposite directions. The source of heat is a laser and a beam is directed into a zoom lens, or a selected one of a series of lenses, so that a beam of selected length and configuration is refracted against the glass tubing between the gripping jaws.

Apparatus For Forming Micropipette Of Controlled Configuration By Moving The Point Of Heat Application

US Patent:
4869745, Sep 26, 1989
Filed:
Apr 24, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/342177
Inventors:
Dale G. Flaming - San Rafael CA
International Classification:
C03B 2311
C03B 3306
US Classification:
65270
Abstract:
The micropipette puller of this invention includes a pair of gripping jaws that pull a length of glass tubing in opposite directions. The source of heat is a laser and a beam is directed into a beam directing means, such as a lens or mirror, to refract or reflect the beam against the glass tubing between the gripping jaws. The mirror or lens may be oscillated at various rates and through selected angles in each direction to move the reflected beam a selected amount and at selected rates along a greater length of the glass tubing.

Method Of Forming An Ultrafine Micropipette

US Patent:
4600424, Jul 15, 1986
Filed:
Mar 21, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/714537
Inventors:
Dale G. Flaming - San Rafael CA
International Classification:
C03B 2311
US Classification:
65 29
Abstract:
A method of forming a micropipette by pulling one end of a glass tubing while the other end is held stationary. A portion of the tubing intermediate the ends thereof is heated and the viscosity of the glass is monitored by measuring the velocity at which the pulled end is moved. When a predetermined velocity is reached, indicating the material has softened sufficiently, the heating and pulling are both stopped. This process may be repeated until the desired pipette tip profile is achieved.
