Haptic Interface System For Collision Detection And Applications Therefore

US Patent:
7084867, Aug 1, 2006
Filed:
Mar 31, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/542942
Inventors:
Stephen S. Ho - Cambridge MA, US
Sanjay Sarma - Belmont MA, US
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
G06T 15/00
US Classification:
345419, 345420, 463 31
Abstract:
A method and system are provided for controlling the simulated interfacing of a controlled first body, for example a tool, with a second body while providing haptic feedback to a user on such interfacing. Selected representations of the first and second bodies are stored in a memory of a processing apparatus and are used by such apparatus to control simulated movement of the first body relative to the second body in response to a user controlled haptic interface device. Collisions between the first and second body are detected, including the position on each body of each collision, the direction of the collision and the force of the collision, and this information is converted for each collision into a force vector on the first body which is fed back as a corresponding force vector to the interface device, and thus to the user. A feature of the invention is storing a point cloud representation of at least one of the bodies, which point cloud representation is utilized in the simulations. The representations may also be an implicit equation representation, a binary space tree partition representation or the like.

System And Method For Providing Road Condition And Congestion Monitoring Using Smart Messages

US Patent:
8566010, Oct 22, 2013
Filed:
Jun 23, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/821176
Inventors:
Sanjay E. Sarma - Lexington MA, US
Stephen Sai-Wung Ho - Cambridge MA, US
Joshua E. Siegel - Bloomfield Hills MI, US
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
G01R 27/28
G01C 21/26
US Classification:
701118, 701200
Abstract:
A communication device for providing road conditions and monitoring congestion, contains a memory and a processor configured by the memory to perform the steps of: extracting key current vehicle and/or traffic insight; determining if the extracted key current vehicle and/or traffic insight represents a departure from expected vehicle and/or traffic insight; if the extracted key current vehicle and/or traffic insight is a departure from expected vehicle and/or traffic insight, using the key current vehicle and/or traffic insight to create a smart message, wherein the smart message contains the extracted key current vehicle and/or traffic insight; and if the extracted key current vehicle and/or traffic insight is a confirmation of expected vehicle and/or traffic insight, creating a confirmation message that does not contain the extracted key current vehicle and/or traffic insight, yet confirms similarity between the extracted key current vehicle and/or traffic insight and the expected vehicle and/or traffic insight.

Leak Detection System

US Patent:
2012025, Oct 11, 2012
Filed:
Apr 8, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/082730
Inventors:
Sanjay E. Sarma - Lexington MA, US
Kamal Youcef-Toumi - Cambridge MA, US
Stephen Sai-Wung Ho - Cambridge MA, US
Dimitrios Chatzigeorgiou - Somerville MA, US
Rached Ben Mansour - Dhahran, SA
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
G01M 3/28
US Classification:
73 405R
Abstract:
The system includes structure for supporting at least one tube within a pipe. The tube has one end disposed close to, or in contact with, a wall of the pipe. A sensor is disposed within the at least one tube to detect a pressure gradient or fluid movement within the tube. Such pressure gradient or fluid movement indicates a leak in the pipe adjacent to the tube location. In a preferred embodiment, the structure is a ring sized to fit within the pipe and the ring supports a plurality of tubes. In another aspect, the tube includes a restriction to prevent flow and pressure is measured on each side of the restriction.
