Phased Array Antenna System With Virtual Time Delay Beam Steering

US Patent:
6529162, Mar 4, 2003
Filed:
May 17, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/859927
Inventors:
Irwin L. Newberg - Pacific Palisades CA, 90272
Oleg Brovko - Los Angeles CA, 90066
Steve I. Hsu - Rancho Palos Verdes CA, 90275
Robert A. Kosmala - Playa Del Rey CA, 90193
Trung T. Nguyen - Huntington Beach CA, 92646
Ricardo Rico, Jr. - Downey CA, 90241
International Classification:
H01Q 322
US Classification:
342375, 342372, 342373
Abstract:
A system and technique for phased array antenna beam steering for transmitting and receiving without sending the waveform through an actual (physical) time delay when a time varying frequency is used as the waveform. The inventive system is adapted for use with an antenna having an array of radiating elements and includes a plurality of signal sources. Each source is adapted to provide a signal having a predetermined frequency offset signal for an associated radiating element or set of radiating elements. For transmit a plurality of first mixers is provided. Each of the first mixers is coupled to receive an excitation signal as a first input and the output from a respective one of the sources as a second input. The output of each mixer is coupled to a respective subset of the antenna radiating elements. In effect, each of the sources provides a virtual time delay.

Method Of Pose Estimation And Model Refinement For Video Representation Of A Three Dimensional Scene

US Patent:
6985620, Jan 10, 2006
Filed:
Mar 7, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/800550
Inventors:
Harpreet Singh Sawhney - West Windsor NJ, US
Rakesh Kumar - Monmouth Junction NJ, US
Steve Hsu - Cranbury NJ, US
Supun Samarasekera - Princeton NJ, US
Assignee:
Sarnoff Corporation - Princeton NJ
International Classification:
G06K 9/00
US Classification:
382154, 382103, 382190, 382294, 348 42, 348169, 345419
Abstract:
The present invention is embodied in a video flashlight method. This method creates virtual images of a scene using a dynamically updated three-dimensional model of the scene and at least one video sequence of images. An estimate of the camera pose is generated by comparing a present image to the three-dimensional model. Next, relevant features of the model are selected based on the estimated pose. The relevant features are then virtually projected onto the estimated pose and matched to features of the image. Matching errors are measured between the relevant features of the virtual projection and the features of the image. The estimated pose is then updated to reduce these matching errors. The model is also refined with updated information from the image. Meanwhile, a viewpoint for a virtual image is selected. The virtual image is then created by projecting the dynamically updated three-dimensional model onto the selected virtual viewpoint.

Single Pass Line Scanning Of An Image With A Color Filter Wheel Having A Plurality Of Filters

US Patent:
5555106, Sep 10, 1996
Filed:
Apr 4, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/223094
Inventors:
Steve H. Hsu - Torrance CA
International Classification:
H04N 146
US Classification:
358512
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for digitizing color images on photographic and other media insures accurate registration between color planes and provides a digitization capability substantially equivalent to the dynamic range of photographic film.

High Spectral Purity Digital Waveform Synthesizer

US Patent:
5495202, Feb 27, 1996
Filed:
Jun 30, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/089066
Inventors:
Steve I. Hsu - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Assignee:
Hughes Aircraft Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
H03B 1900
H03L 700
G06G 728
US Classification:
327113
Abstract:
A digital waveform synthesizer, using a direct digital synthesizer and a digital frequency divider. The direct digital synthesizer provides a digitally synthesized input frequency signal. An upconverter and frequency divider circuit upconverts and divides the synthesized input frequency signal to provide an divided synthesized frequency signal. An output upconverter circuit is coupled to the upconverter and divider circuit for providing an upconverted output frequency signal. A reference frequency generator is coupled to the direct digital synthesizer, to the upconverter and divider circuit, and to the output upconverter, for providing clock and frequency reference signals thereto. The waveform generator is coupled to the direct digital synthesizer for commanding a desired waveform. The frequency divider is used to improve the inherently poor spurious signal performance of the direct digital synthesizer.

Ultra Low Noise Frequency Generator Producing The Sum Of Plural Signal Sources

US Patent:
5625324, Apr 29, 1997
Filed:
Jun 7, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/482334
Inventors:
Steve I. Hsu - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Stephen D. Taylor - Agoura CA
Assignee:
Hughes Electronics - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
H03L 707
US Classification:
331 2
Abstract:
The frequencies of N oscillators are summed to provide a signal generator output signal. Because the phase noise power spectral densities of the oscillators add as power, the frequency summed output exhibits a noise degradation over a single oscillator of only 10 log(N). The signal generator is implemented to assure independence of the oscillator noise contributions, with phase locking the oscillators to a common frequency for ease of spurious signal control.

Discrete Phase Modulator

US Patent:
5673051, Sep 30, 1997
Filed:
Dec 21, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/576325
Inventors:
Howard S. Nussbaum - Los Angeles CA
William P. Posey - Palos Verdes Estates CA
Steve I. Hsu - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Stephen D. Taylor - Agoura CA
Assignee:
Hughes Electronics - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
G01S 1300
US Classification:
342202
Abstract:
Discrete phase modulation for modulating the transmit and receive radar signal waveforms in order to control distortion. The signal is modulated by discrete phases which change from pulse-to-pulse. A digital frequency division circuit accurately generates the modulation signals, and allows the discrete phases to be generated with precise accuracy. The discrete phase changes can be a quadratic phase progression for target Doppler and range detection.

Wideband, Low Noise Microwave Signal Generator

US Patent:
5225840, Jul 6, 1993
Filed:
Jun 8, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/894898
Inventors:
Steve Hsu - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Assignee:
Hughes Aircraft Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
G01S 7282
H03L 700
US Classification:
342175
Abstract:
An efficient wideband low noise microwave signal generator for active radars. Separate transmit drive (TD) and receiver local oscillator (LO) signals are generated by use of a single programmable reference generator and two frequency synthesized signals separated in frequency by an offset precisely equal to the transmit drive offset. The frequency synthesized signals are respectively summed and subtracted in frequency with the reference generator signal to obtain signals which may be selected as the TD and LO signals.
