Authentication Of Mobile Devices Via Proxy Device

US Patent:
7203482, Apr 10, 2007
Filed:
Apr 30, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/836056
Inventors:
Steven Blumenthal - Lexington MA, US
Oliver C. Ibe - Andover MA, US
International Classification:
H04M 1/66
US Classification:
455411, 4554351, 455455, 4554261, 370338, 370328, 370352
Abstract:
A mechanism to permit the cryptographic authentication of a mobile device in the cellular carrier's network when the device is present in the 802. 11 network, wireless LAN, served by a Cellular Controller and not connected directly to the cellular carrier's network via a radio link is disclosed. The Cellular Controller acts as a proxy for the mobile device when the device is in a building served by an 802. 11 wireless LAN. The solutions features the separation of a mobile device's radio function from its ANSI-41 authentication mechanism to permit the proxy function to work and to not have to duplicate the ANSI-41 authentication data and CAVE algorithm.

Data Handoff Method Between Wireless Local Area Network And Wireless Wide Area Network

US Patent:
7356015, Apr 8, 2008
Filed:
Apr 30, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/836057
Inventors:
Oliver C. Ibe - Andover MA, US
Steven Blumenthal - Lexington MA, US
International Classification:
H04Q 7/24
H04Q 7/20
H04M 1/66
US Classification:
370338, 455411, 455445
Abstract:
A method and associated system enables seamless data roaming and handoff between the wireless local area network (WLAN) and the wireless wide-area network (WWAN). This method enables a mobile device to originate a data connection in the WLAN and have this data connection be automatically handed off to the WWAN without losing the connection when the user goes outside the range of the WLAN. Similarly, it enables a mobile device to originate a data connection in the WWAN and have this data connection be automatically handed off to the WLAN without losing the connection when the user loses the signal of the WWAN. This solution assumes that the user has subscribed to data services from a cellular carrier that will authenticate the user before permitting the handoff.

Mobile And Packet-Based Call Control

US Patent:
2007007, Mar 29, 2007
Filed:
Jul 25, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/492698
Inventors:
Harry Mussman - Bedford MA, US
Wen Han - Lexington MA, US
Michael Wilhoite - Chicago IL, US
Lee Goodman - Tyngsboro MA, US
Tom Joyner - Chicago IL, US
Sanjay Jhawar - Chicago IL, US
Steven Blumenthal - Lexington MA, US
International Classification:
H04L 12/28
US Classification:
370351000, 455445000
Abstract:
A telecommunication approach provides telephone service to subscribers on terminals registered on a mobile network that are consistent with the services provided to those subscribers at terminals on a fixed communication network. For instance, the subscriber on the terminals on the mobile network may have access to mid-call features and private dialing plans that are supported using elements on the fixed network, and calls placed to the subscribers at addresses (e.g., wireline numbers or SIP addresses) on the fixed network may be delivered to their terminals on the mobile network.

Network Based Authentication

US Patent:
2007023, Oct 4, 2007
Filed:
Apr 3, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/397313
Inventors:
Ivan Bogdanovic - Brookline MA, US
Justin Aborn - Hingham MA, US
Steven Blumenthal - Lexington MA, US
Sanjay Jhawar - Chicago IL, US
International Classification:
H04L 9/32
US Classification:
726003000
Abstract:
Application layer authentication of a data-network based application makes use of a SIM function accessible to the application and telephone network authentication service accessible to a server to the application. For example, the application uses SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) for communication with the server and the authentication service is provided via a GSM based telephone network. In one implementation, a device (a “dongle”) includes an authentication module, application software, and an interface for communicating with a remote server over a data communication network. The application software includes instructions for using the authentication module to authorize an application layer interaction with the remote server.

International Call And Data Routing

US Patent:
2007023, Oct 11, 2007
Filed:
Apr 5, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/398773
Inventors:
Wen Han - Lexington MA, US
Michael Wilhoite - Chicago IL, US
Steven Blumenthal - Lexington MA, US
International Classification:
H04Q 7/20
US Classification:
455445000, 455435100, 455428000, 455435200
Abstract:
Telecommunication services are provided to users. User information for a first identity of a user in a first telecommunication network is maintained. An active presence for a mobile device for the user is maintained by means of a second identity in a second telecommunication network. A presence of the user in the first network is emulated using a gateway system that couples the first telecommunication network to the second telecommunication network.

Data Conversion

US Patent:
2007026, Nov 15, 2007
Filed:
Apr 4, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/397325
Inventors:
Wen K. Han - Lexington MA, US
Steven H. Blumenthal - Lexington MA, US
International Classification:
H04L 12/66
US Classification:
370356
Abstract:
Voice communication between a mobile station and a packet-based voice communication system is handled. A communication interface for mobile station access to a telecommunication network over a public data network according to a first protocol is emulated at a gateway system. Communications pass between the gateway and the packet-based voice communication system according to a second protocol. Control communication information passing between the mobile station and the packet-based voice communication system is converted.

Unlicensed Mobile Access

US Patent:
2008013, Jun 5, 2008
Filed:
Dec 4, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/566616
Inventors:
Steven H. Blumenthal - Lexington MA, US
International Classification:
H04B 1/38
US Classification:
455558
Abstract:
An apparatus, such as a removable computer device (e.g., a USB device), includes application software stored on a computer-readable medium which may be loaded to computer coupled to the device. An interface on the device is used to couple the apparatus to a computer and to pass the application software to the computer. The application software can include a “soft phone” application. An authentication module on the device provides authentication information, for example from a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) through the interface, and the application software includes instructions for using the authentication information in a communication exchange over a data network using a cellular telephone protocol with a network element coupled to a cellular telephone network. In some examples, the protocol is a GSM protocol and the network element is Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) Network Controller (NC).

System And Method For Selection Of Transmit Array

US Patent:
2022027, Aug 25, 2022
Filed:
Feb 8, 2022
Appl. No.:
17/667429
Inventors:
- Hanover NH, US
Steven H. Blumenthal - Lexington MA, US
International Classification:
H04B 7/08
H04B 7/185
Abstract:
A system and method for selecting antenna panels for communicating with satellites. The receive panels directed towards a location in the sky where the satellite is expected to be. When the signal from the satellite is received by the panels, parameters of the signals are checked against a threshold. All the panels having the parameters above the threshold are grouped together as a receive group. The parameters of the signals at the receive groups are compared to determine the best receive panel, and the transmit panel associate with the receive panel is selected as the transmit panel.
