Polarization Diversity Receiver With Planar Waveguide And Polarizing Beam Splitter

US Patent:
2003001, Jan 23, 2003
Filed:
Jul 19, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/909364
Inventors:
Tun Tan - Los Altos Hills CA, US
Douglas Baney - Los Altos CA, US
Steven Newton - Los Altos CA, US
International Classification:
H04B010/06
US Classification:
359/192000, 359/191000
Abstract:
An optical detection system includes a planar waveguide optical coupler that is directly adjacent to a polarizing beam splitter. The planar waveguide optical coupler combines an input signal with a local oscillator signal and the polarizing beam splitter divides the combined optical signal into orthogonally polarized beams. The orthogonally polarized beams are detected by first and second optical detectors. In one embodiment, the planar waveguide optical coupler is in contact with the polarizing beam splitter, in another embodiment, the planar waveguide optical coupler is attached to the polarizing beam splitter, and in another embodiment, the planar waveguide optical coupler and the polarizing beam splitter are attached to opposite sides of a polarization rotator.

Method Of Controlling A Device And A Device Controlled Thereby

US Patent:
2009011, Apr 30, 2009
Filed:
Oct 31, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/933189
Inventors:
Lee A. BARFORD - San Jose CA, US
Steven A. NEWTON - Los Altos CA, US
Assignee:
AGILENT TECHNOLOGIES, INC. - Loveland CO
International Classification:
G06F 9/22
US Classification:
712220, 712E09004
Abstract:
A method of controlling at least one device is disclosed. The method includes providing the device with at least one constraint for carrying out an operation. The device determines if the constraint can be met. If it is determined that the constraint can be met, the device determines on its own accord a manner to get into a state wherein the constraint will be met. The device then goes into the state in the determined manner. A device that is controlled by the method and a system including such a device are also disclosed.

Parametric Diode Amplifier

US Patent:
4805237, Feb 14, 1989
Filed:
May 10, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/191729
Inventors:
David K. Donald - Mountain View CA
Shih-Yuan Wang - Palo Alto CA
Tirumala R. Ranganath - Palo Alto CA
Steven A. Newton - Belmont CA
William R. Trutna - Atherton CA
David M. Bloom - Menlo Park CA
Frank K. David - Santa Rosa CA
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Company - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
H04B 900
US Classification:
455619
Abstract:
A parametric photodiode amplifier suitable for detecting light of frequency f and intensity P and having intersecting I:V curves for zero incident light and for incident light of intensity P. These photodiodes typically have an intrinsic density of carriers that is on the order of or less than the density of carriers produced by incident light of intensity P. When the photodiode is biased by an LO signal and is illuminated with modulated light of carrier frequency f, the photodiode output signal contains IF components at the difference between the frequencies of the modulation signal and the frequencies of on the order of the 23 lower harmonics of the LO signal.

High Speed Pulse Train Generator

US Patent:
4652079, Mar 24, 1987
Filed:
Aug 26, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/527163
Inventors:
Herbert J. Shaw - Stanford CA
Steven A. Newton - Menlo Park CA
Assignee:
The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University - Stanford CA
International Classification:
G02B 626
US Classification:
350 9615
Abstract:
There is disclosed a high speed pulse train generator for generating a train of pulses having arbitrarily close spacing. The apparatus consists of a generator loop comprised of a fiber optic waveguide looped through a directional coupler with the output fiber serving as the input fiber for a similarly structured multiplexer loop. The lengths of the two loops are adjusted such that the time difference in the propagation times of light around the respective loops is small compared to the time of propagation around either loop. The times are adjusted to obtain any arbitrary spacing of the pulses in the output pulse train which is comprised of interleaved pulse trains resulting from each pulse input to the multiplexer loop. Also disclosed is a single loop embodiment for bidirectional data rate transformation and methods of using all the embodiments.

Tapped Optical Fiber Delay Line

US Patent:
4558920, Dec 17, 1985
Filed:
Nov 19, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/323038
Inventors:
Steven A. Newton - Menlo Park CA
John E. Bowers - Mountain View CA
Assignee:
Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University - Stanford CA
International Classification:
G02B 5172
US Classification:
350 9615
Abstract:
A fiber optic tapped delay line is disclosed which has a number of taps simultaneously fabricated in a single length of optical fiber. The light output from each tap is detected by either an electronic photodetector or by an output segment of optical fiber having a lapped surface, the latter technique also being utilizable in the mass production of optical couplers. The device may be used as a transversal filter by summing the outputs from the taps, and the frequency passband may be custom-tailored by selectively weighting the outputs from individual taps.

Fiber Optic Word Generator

US Patent:
4495656, Jan 22, 1985
Filed:
Sep 13, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/417506
Inventors:
Herbert J. Shaw - Stanford CA
Steven A. Newton - Menlo Park CA
John E. Bowers - Milltown NJ
Kenneth P. Jackson - Stanford CA
Assignee:
Stanford Junior University - Stanford CA
International Classification:
H04B 900
US Classification:
455608
Abstract:
A digital word generator uses a tap fiber optic delay line to generate a sequence of pulses. The pulses are weighted and combined to produce a digital word.

Fiber Optic Data Distributor

US Patent:
4511207, Apr 16, 1985
Filed:
Sep 10, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/416667
Inventors:
Steven A. Newton - Menlo Park CA
John E. Bowers - Milltown NJ
Assignee:
The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University - Stanford CA
International Classification:
G02B 514
US Classification:
350 9615
Abstract:
A fiber optic data distributor utilizes a one-by-n single mode optical fiber directional coupler to distribute data from a single fiber to a plurality of separate fibers. The separate fibers may supply data from a central processing unit to peripheral units, which may also input data to the separate fibers for transmission to the central processing unit.

Adaptive Selection Of Otdr Test Parameters And The Fusion Of Data Taken From Successively Shrinking Measurement Spans

US Patent:
4812038, Mar 14, 1989
Filed:
Jan 21, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/005993
Inventors:
Steven A. Newton - Belmont CA
Scott H. Foster - LaHonda CA
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Company - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
G01N 2184
US Classification:
356 731
Abstract:
A method of dynamically changing the measurement window and operating parameters of the instrument, based on intermediate results, in order to minimize the total time required to make a complete measurement. Also, a method of combining partial results from subwindows into a final result to be displayed that has not been corrupted by variation in system response due to time-varying operating parameters.
