My name is Susan, and I came to Charleston, SC, nearly eight years ago on a trip from Chicago. Perhaps it was returning to the bustle where I could read the incoming aircraft numbers overhead, I’m not certain. But, whatever it was that set me on the path to do something so completely foreign to my nature, I could not get this sprawling coastal town, it's sights, smells, sounds, and it’s being out of my head. Within a year, I was packing all I owned to move 1000 miles from every living soul I knew. I had never lived far from the sweet scent of cornhusks rustling amidst the summer evening, and transitioning to a new culture made me embrace all kinds of exciting things I had never imagined before. That’s where this blog came into existence. When I arrived in Charleston, everything had an impact on my awareness, from the sandy dust beneath my feet to the melody of the Gullah ladies’ conversations. Spicy, putrid, ancient, and sweet all at once…I doubt I can ever aptly share the fullness of palate on this flat canvas. But, perhaps whatever you take away may pass through a few quiet moments of your time for a better glimpse of my Charleston.
