A system and method for reading and writing in a multilevel optical data system is disclosed. The system provides control signals for timing acquisition, level calibration, DC control, AGC, equalizer training and data synchronization. The user data is ECC protected and optionally convolutionally encoded before being combined with the control signals in an information block. The multilevel information block can be written to an optical disc as a series of multilevel marks. The optical disc may also contain an Address in Pregroove signal (AIP) to facilitate synchronization during writing of an information block. The AIP signal has an integer number of address frames per information block.

Method And Apparatus For Providing Equalization For The Reading Of Marks On Optical Data Storage Media

US Patent:
5818806, Oct 6, 1998
Filed:
May 6, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/852242
Inventors:
Terrence L. Wong - San Francisco CA
Steven R. Spielman - Berkeley CA
Assignee:
Calimetrics, Inc. - Emeryville CA
International Classification:
G11B 700
US Classification:
369 59
Abstract:
A system and method are disclosed for compensating for intersymbol interference on an optical disc. The method includes measuring an intersymbol linear transfer function. The intersymbol linear transfer function substantially describes a linear portion of the effect of intersymbol interference on an optically detected read signal from an optical disc. The intersymbol linear transfer function is convolved with a write signal to produce a linearly transformed portion of the optically detected read signal. An inverse linear transfer function of the intersymbol linear transfer function is determined. The inverse linear transfer function has the property of canceling the effect of convolving the intersymbol linear transfer function with the write signal. The optically detected read signal is convolved with the inverse linear transfer function. Thus, the linear portion of the effect of intersymbol interference on an optically detected read signal from an optical disc is canceled by the convolution of the optically detected read signal with the inverse linear transfer function.
