Disclosed are schemes for selecting an interexchange telephone call carrier, selecting a route to the selected carrier, and establishing a call path on the selected route to the selected carrier in a multicarrier environment. Call path establishment from an end office at which a call is originating to the carrier's office is accomplished via a multifrequency signaling scheme. If the call is an international call or the route is an indirect route to a carrier via an access tandem, following seizure of a trunk the end office outpulses thereon a first sequence of information that characterizes the subsequent route that the call should take, including identity of the interexchange or international carrier. After receiving a wink responsive to the first sequence, the end office outpulses a second sequence. If the call is a domestic call routed directly to a carrier, following seizure of the trunk the end office begins outpulsing with the second sequence.

The vehicle speed and engine speed at which upshifts and downshifts occur, according to a standard gear shift schedule, is compensated for loss of engine torque at conditions that differ from the conditions at which a reference shift schedule is defined. Vehicle speed is compensated for torque variation with reference to the ratio of current calculated engine torque divided by current engine output torque.

A system for scheduling gear ratio changes in an automatic transmission and controlling operation of a torque converter bypass clutch includes a microprocessor; electronic memory containing control algorithms, lookup tables, functions and constants; solenoid-operated shift valves, a variable force solenoid, friction clutches, brakes and sensors, and planetary gear units. A table of calibrated performance weighting factors (PWF) is used to alter reference schedules of gear ratio changes based on the extent to which high performance operation is desired rather than economy operation. The PWFs are used to adjust gear shift points based on inferences drawn from engine throttle position and time rate of change of throttle position. Hydraulic pressure supplied to the friction elements and the schedule of unlocked and modulated operation of the torque converter are adjusted from reference schedules and pressures on the basis of PWF values.
