Switchable Multiple Source Power Supply

US Patent:
6583522, Jun 24, 2003
Filed:
Sep 27, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/670079
Inventors:
Thomas C. McNulty - Trenton NJ
Anand Rangarajan - Berkeley Heights NJ
Assignee:
WorldWater Corp. - Pennington NJ
International Classification:
H02J 100
US Classification:
307 71, 323906
Abstract:
In a readily switchable multiple solar panel system, the individual solar panels are interconnected with a control or switching apparatus which allows the solar panels to be readily switched into various series, parallel, or series-parallel configurations. With a relay based switching apparatus, a relay is connected between a pair of solar panels, so that in a first state, the panels are in series where the total voltage is the sum of each individual panels voltage. When the relay is switched to the second state, each solar panel is in parallel, where the total voltage is a single panels voltage and the current is multiplied by the number of panels. Multiple panels can be connected in this manner, with a relay between each successive pair of panels. With each relay connected in a parallel arrangement, a simple control switch in series with the relay coils can control the panel switching. The coil of each relay can also be individually controlled.

Maximum Power Point Motor Control

US Patent:
7148650, Dec 12, 2006
Filed:
Jun 22, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/158876
Inventors:
Thomas Charles McNulty - Ewing NJ, US
Juan Carlos Horta - Perth Amboy NJ, US
Joacine Plaisime - Hamilton Township NJ, US
Assignee:
World Water & Power Corp. - Pennington NJ
International Classification:
H02P 27/06
H02M 5/45
H01L 31/042
US Classification:
318801, 318800, 318807, 320 30, 323906, 136243, 136244, 363 74, 363 95
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are implemented in software to control motor speed as a function of available power in a DC source-inverter-AC motor system, i. e. to perform maximum power tracking of motor speed. An inverter or motor drive converts DC power from a DC source, such as a solar panel, to AC power, to power the motor. The inverter or motor drive is controlled by software, implemented either by programmable features built directly into the inverter or drive or by a separate programmable device connected to the inverter or drive, to track motor power as a function of source power. The software-controlled inverter or drive sets motor speed as a function of source power by sensing only a single parameter, the DC source voltage. The software-controlled inverter or drive samples the source voltage at preset intervals, and changes the frequency of the AC output of the inverter or drive to match or track the available power so that the motor operates at or near its optimum for any source voltage.

Ac/Dc Hybrid Power System

US Patent:
2004009, May 20, 2004
Filed:
Nov 6, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/704241
Inventors:
Thomas McNulty - Ewing NJ, US
Anand Rangarajan - Berkeley Heights NJ, US
International Classification:
H02J007/32
US Classification:
320/101000
Abstract:
A hybrid power system has two voltage sources, a variable DC power source, and a second power source, connected through selection components to a common node. The variable DC power source may be a solar power source and the second source may be an AC grid. The selection components, e.g. blocking diodes, SCRs, or relays, allow one or both of the sources to be connected to the node depending on the voltages produced by the sources. A variable speed drive and load may be connected to the node.

No Load Motor Cutoff Method And Apparatus

US Patent:
2006005, Mar 16, 2006
Filed:
Sep 10, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/938829
Inventors:
Thomas McNulty - Ewing NJ, US
Joacine Plaisime - Trenton NJ, US
International Classification:
H02P 3/00
US Classification:
318474000
Abstract:
A motor is shut off when its operation encounters no load conditions, e.g. low water conditions for a submersible pump motor. The shutoff signal is obtained from the motor frequency and motor power. When motor frequency exceeds the rated frequency and motor power drops to a preselected level below rated power, a shutoff signal is produced. The motor can be kept off for a preselected period of time before attempting to restart.

Solar Power Control Using Irradiance

US Patent:
2007029, Dec 20, 2007
Filed:
Jun 14, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/452627
Inventors:
Thomas Charles McNulty - Ewing NJ, US
Juan Carlos Horta - North Brunswick NJ, US
International Classification:
H02P 27/04
US Classification:
318800
Abstract:
Distribution of solar power in a solar DC source—variable frequency drive (VFD)—AC motor system is controlled by using solar irradiance. In addition, motor speed may be controlled as a function of available power, i.e. maximum power point tracking of motor speed, using solar irradiance.

Bias Controlled Dc To Ac Converter And Systems

US Patent:
6275403, Aug 14, 2001
Filed:
Dec 31, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/224537
Inventors:
Thomas C. McNulty - Trenton NJ
Douglas B. Williams - Florence NJ
Assignee:
WorldWater Corporation - Pennington NJ
International Classification:
H02M 7537
H02M 324
US Classification:
363131
Abstract:
It is difficult to control a variable speed converter or inverter so that an AC motor or other load may be operated from a DC source under varying source and/or load conditions. A DC bias voltage control related to AC frequency by a predetermined relationship is used to control the DC to AC converter. For variable speed AC converters, a low voltage bias control circuit is effectively used to control motor frequency by applying a bias voltage to the converter so that the load requirements are optimally met by the available DC source voltage. The controller can be used in many DC source--bias controlled converter--AC load systems formed with the bias controlled drive, for example a solar powered water pump in which a DC photovoltaic panel is used to power an AC pump motor.
