Synthesis Of Ruthenium Or Osmium Metathesis Catalysts

US Patent:
6504041, Jan 7, 2003
Filed:
Sep 28, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/967198
Inventors:
Robert H. Grubbs - South Pasadena CA
Tomas R. Belderrain - Seville, ES
Seth N. Brown - South Bend IN
Thomas E. Wilhelm - Pasadena CA
Assignee:
California Institute of Technology - Pasadena CA
International Classification:
C07F 1500
US Classification:
556 21, 556 23, 556136, 502152
Abstract:
The present invention relates to the synthesis of highly active ruthenium and osmium carbene metathesis catalyst in good yield from readily available starting materials. The catalysts that may be synthesized are of the general formula wherein: M is ruthenium or osmium; X and X are independently any anionic ligand; L and L are any neutral electron donor ligand; and, R and R are each hydrogen or one of the following substituent groups: C -C alkenyl, C -C alkynyl, C -C alkyl, aryl, C -C carboxylate, C -C alkoxy, C -C alkenyloxy, C -C alkynyloxy, aryloxy, C -C alkoxycarbonyl, C -C alkylthio, C -C alkylsulfonyl and C -C alkylsulfinyl. Optionally, the substituent group may be substituted with one or more groups selected from C -C alkyl, halogen, C -C alkoxy, and aryl. When the substitute aryl group is phenyl, it may be further substituted with one or more groups selected from a halogen, a C -C alkyl, or a C -C alkoxy. Specific synthetic protocols for vinyl alkylidene catalysts wherein R is hydrogen and R is âCHCR R and non-vinyl alkylidene catalysts are also disclosed.

Thermally Initiated Polymerization Of Olefins Using Ruthenium Or Osmium Vinylidene Complexes

US Patent:
RE38676, Dec 21, 2004
Filed:
Aug 21, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/224679
Inventors:
Robert H. Grubbs - South Pasadena CA
Thomas E. Wilhelm - Plainfield NJ
Assignee:
California Institute of Technology - Pasadena CA
International Classification:
C08F 200
US Classification:
526 73, 526171, 526172, 526281, 526283, 526922, 556 21, 556 22, 556136, 502152, 502162, 264 5, 524 81
Abstract:
The present invention generally relates to the use of certain ruthenium and osmium complexes that are substantially inactive at a first temperature (preferably about room temperature) but becomes progressively more active at a higher second temperature. This difference in reactivities allows the reaction mixture to be formed and manipulated at the first temperature until polymerization is desired. When appropriate, the reaction mixture is heated to a suitable temperature (preferably greater than 50Â C. ) to activate the catalyst and to initiate polymerization. Because both the initiation and the rate of polymerization may be controlled with temperature, the inventive methods are especially suitable for ring opening metathesis polymerization (âROMPâ) reactions and for molding polymer articles that require extended pot-lives.
