G02B 6/36
US Classification:
385 90, 385 34, 385 35, 385 93
Abstract:
Au automated laser pressing system assembles and aligns a laser header subassembly to a lens housing. The automated system generally includes a precise press system and a fast fiber alignment system. The press system precisely presses the housing onto the header, or the header onto the housing, and the fiber alignment system keeps a fiber in alignment with light passed through the lens to measure the laser header to lens housing alignment. Feedback from the fiber alignment system to the housing press system is used to precisely and automatically adjust the alignment as necessary before the housing and header are permanently affixed.

Automated Characterization System For Laser Chip On A Submount

US Patent:
7449905, Nov 11, 2008
Filed:
Feb 13, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/674635
Inventors:
Ting Shi - San Jose CA, US
Daniel Tran - San Jose CA, US
Pavel Ploscariu - San Ramon CA, US
Assignee:
Finisar Corporation - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G01R 31/02
US Classification:
324760, 324758, 324767
Abstract:
A temperature-controlled system for testing a laser die mounted on a submount is disclosed. The testing system comprises a base having a motor-driven translation platform. The translation platform includes a first testing site having a two-stage temperature control system mounted on a base portion. The temperature control system includes a thermoelectric cooler and a fluid system for circulating a cooling/heating fluid in a circulation block. A mounting portion is also included on the first testing site on which the submount is positioned. The temperature of the mounting portion is controlled by the temperature control system. A probe card having an arm and an electrical contact portion attached to the arm provides a power supply to the submount when the first testing site is aligned with the probe card. An aligner having a lens assembly that is alignable with the first testing site receives an optical signal produced by the laser.

Bidirectional Lens Pressing System

US Patent:
7562621, Jul 21, 2009
Filed:
Feb 20, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/677028
Inventors:
Ting Shi - San Jose CA, US
Zhiqiang Zheng - Sunnyvale CA, US
Pavel Ploscariu - San Ramon CA, US
Assignee:
Finisar Corporation - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
B30B 1/18
B23P 21/00
US Classification:
100289, 100226, 100231, 100264, 100353, 292813, 29257, 29793
Abstract:
A bidirectional lens pressing system for use in pressing a lens into a port housing is disclosed. The lens pressing system includes a frame that supports a top motor stage, a bottom motor stage, and an indexing stage. The indexing stage is interposed between the top and bottom motor stages and includes a hole that retains a port housing or other component. The top pressing tool is selectively movable in a first direction by the top motor stage and includes a first engagement surface for engaging the lens. Correspondingly, the bottom pressing tool is selectively movable in a an opposing second direction by the bottom motor stage and includes a second engagement surface for engaging the port housing. The first and second engagement surfaces of the top and bottom pressing tools cooperate to press the lens into the port housing while imposing no net force on the indexing stage.

Automated Laser Header Testing

US Patent:
7595630, Sep 29, 2009
Filed:
Sep 26, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/535350
Inventors:
Ting Shi - San Jose CA, US
Daniel Tran - San Jose CA, US
Pavel Ploscariu - San Ramon CA, US
Assignee:
Finisar Corporation - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G01R 31/28
US Classification:
3241581
Abstract:
Systems for automated laser header testing are disclosed. A system can include a base portion, a rotary stage supported by the base portion, at least one testing site supported by the rotary stage, and a plurality of testing stations supported by the base portion and radially arranged about a center point of the rotary stage for testing the laser header. Each testing site can include a testing fixture supported by the testing site. The testing fixture can include an air shield providing an isolated environment for testing the laser header. The testing fixture can further include a heat sink and air ducts for controlling testing conditions. Electrical contact members can releasably contact leads of the laser header and a releasing mechanism releases the leads of the laser header from the electrical contact members.

Zero Force Socket For Laser / Photodiode Alignment

US Patent:
7686521, Mar 30, 2010
Filed:
Nov 8, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/983416
Inventors:
Ting Shi - San Jose CA, US
Nathan Jones - Los Gatos CA, US
Assignee:
Finisar Corporation - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G02B 6/36
US Classification:
385 89, 439260
Abstract:
The present invention relates to the use of zero force sockets to provide power to an optical device, such as a laser diode or photodiode, during active alignment of the optical device. The zero force sockets can be repeatedly changed between an open position for insertion and removal of optical device leads with minimal drag and a closed position for securing and providing power to the optical device leads. A pneumatically driven air cylinder can be used to open and/or close the zero force sockets. Devices for securing the optical device leads in place include, for example, lead clamps, which close upon conductive sleeves into which the optical device leads have been inserted, and conductive leaf springs, which close (when a pneumatic plunger is withdrawn) upon the laser diode leads, securing them in place and providing a conductive pathway.

Auto-Alignment System With Focused Light Beam

US Patent:
2003015, Aug 21, 2003
Filed:
May 17, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/150417

Alex Klajic - San Jose CA, US
International Classification:
H01J003/14
H01J005/16
US Classification:
250/234000
Abstract:
Characterizing the surface responsivity of a photo-detector includes focusing a light beam on the photo-detector surface and measuring a response of the photo-detector. The focused light beam is scanned across the surface of the photo-detector. The response of the photo-detector at each position may be recorded to allow the responsivity of the photo-detector surface to be characterized.
