455522, 455 69, 455418, 4554261, 4555521, 370319, 370331, 370352
Abstract:
A system and method of re-distributing power output by a portable mobile communications device while operating in dual transfer mode (DTM) is disclosed. The device determines if more than one uplink slot is active and if DTM is active. If so, power can be separately regulated for packet switched and carrier switched uplink slots. The device determines whether the circuit switched slot is being used for a voice call that is not in a handsfree or speakerphone mode and evaluates factors associated with the current operating conditions. New power settings are calculated based on the mode for the active circuit switched slot and the factors associated with the current operating conditions of the device. The new power settings are then applied to the active uplink slots such that power is re-distributed on a per slot basis that is not necessarily divided equally among all active slots.

Adaptively Selecting Signal Constellations For Multi-Carrier Edge

US Patent:
8102810, Jan 24, 2012
Filed:
Sep 15, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/210507
Inventors:
Leland Scott Bloebaum - Cary NC, US
Toby John Bowen - Durham NC, US
Assignee:
Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB - Lund
International Classification:
H04W 72/04
US Classification:
370330, 370436, 370478
Abstract:
The wireless communication device and corresponding method described herein selectively switches between a single-frequency mode, such as appropriate for an EDGE network, and a multiple-frequency mode, such as appropriate for a multi-carrier EDGE network. Accordingly, a transmitting wireless communication device selectively switches between a single-channel mapping unit, used during the single-frequency mode, and a multi-channel mapping unit, used during the multiple-frequency mode. The multi-channel mapping unit modulates input data to output a modulated data stream for each of multiple adjacent frequency channels that, when combined, produce a multiple-frequency signal with reduced peak-to-average ratio. A receiving wireless communication device selectively switches between a single-channel demodulator, used during the single-frequency mode, and a multi-channel demodulator, used during the multiple-frequency mode.

Reuse Of Training Sequence Between Frequency-Adjacent Radio Signals

US Patent:
8369289, Feb 5, 2013
Filed:
Aug 14, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/191798
Inventors:
Toby John Bowen - Durham NC, US
Leland Scott Bloebaum - Cary NC, US
Assignee:
Sony Mobile Communications AB - Lund
International Classification:
H04W 4/00
US Classification:
370334, 3703102, 4554221, 375232, 375346
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for processing received signals in a multi-carrier system are disclosed. An exemplary method includes estimating one or more first propagation channel coefficients based on a training sequence in each of one or more first slots received over a first radio channel, equalizing signal samples from one or more second slots received over a second radio channel immediately frequency-adjacent to the first radio channel, using the first propagation channel coefficients, and demodulating user data bits from the equalized signal samples. In some embodiments, the training sequence is located at a fixed position in each of the one or more first slots and user data bits are demodulated from a directly corresponding position in each of the second slots. Improved data rates are thus achieved by constraining radio carriers in a multi-carrier system to frequency-adjacent channels and eliminating training symbols from one of the signals.

Filed:
Aug 12, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/190052
Inventors:
Toby John Bowen - Durham NC, US
Leland Scott Bloebaum - Cary NC, US
Assignee:
Sony Mobile Communications AB - Lund
International Classification:
H04B 7/08
H04B 7/00
H04B 1/26
H03J 7/32
H04M 1/00
US Classification:
455132, 455140, 455147, 455258, 455318, 4555521
Abstract:
The wireless receiver of the present invention accommodates dual-carrier Evolved EDGE without significantly impacting existing receiver architectures. The inventive receiver comprises a shared local oscillator and two image-rejecting downconverters. The local oscillator generates a local oscillator frequency between two carrier frequencies of adjacent radio channels. The receiver receives a signal in each of the adjacent radio channels. In a dual-carrier mode, a first image-rejecting downconverter uses the local oscillator frequency to downconvert a first signal received in the first radio channel while rejecting a second signal received in the second radio channel. A second image-rejecting downconverter uses the local oscillator frequency to downconvert the second signal while rejecting the first signal. In a diversity mode, the first and second image-rejecting downconverters use the local oscillator frequency to downconvert the signal received in one of the radio channels while rejecting the signal received in the other radio channel.
