Sound Board Emulation Using Digital Signal Processor

US Patent:
6412024, Jun 25, 2002
Filed:
Sep 27, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/672168
Inventors:
Mark Hsu - Fremont CA
Yann Le Cornec - Fremont CA
Julien T. Nguyen - Redwood City CA
Assignee:
Sigma Designs, Inc. - Milpitas CA
International Classification:
G06F 1540
US Classification:
710 5
Abstract:
An improved audio-output device coupleable to a computer system, in which a DSP operating under software control emulates a common command interface. The command interface has a set of registers that are made available to the CPU for reading and writing, even if there are no such physical registers available in the device. The DSP also performs tasks in addition to audio-output, even though the audio-output device is required to respond immediately to commands from the CPU. The audio-output device has a DSP for interpreting and executing commands received from the CPU, a local memory for storing data input to or output from the DSP, a bus-interface (BIF) element for coupling the DSP and memory to a system bus, and a direct memory access (DMA) element for transferring data between the local memory and the system bus. The local memory has an emulation region for emulating a set of named registers the CPU may read from and write into according to the command interface, and a communication region for transmitting messages between the CPU and the DSP. The emulation region is indicated by a base register and a set of offset values, and has a dynamically allocated set of registers for emulating the set of named registers the CPU may read from and write into.

Analog Video Chromakey Mixer

US Patent:
6421096, Jul 16, 2002
Filed:
Jan 5, 1998
Appl. No.:
08/765464
Inventors:
Julien T. Nguyen - Saratoga CA
Assignee:
Sigman Designs, Inc. - Milpitas CA
International Classification:
H04N 975
US Classification:
348587, 348592
Abstract:
An improved technique for mixing picture signals directed at a monitor screen. Two analog video signals (such as an analog VGA input and an analog RGB signal produced in response to a stored digital still or moving image) may be multiplexed in analog form. An analog chromakey mixer detects a background color in the first video signal (such as the analog VGA input), and replaces the portion of that first video signal with the second video signal. The time delays of the first video and the second video signal may be adjusted so that they reach the monitor screen (by means o a multiplexer output) at the same time. An alignment detector may attempt to align chromakey mixer until the time difference between the first and the second video signals falls below a threshold.

An analog chromakey mixer detects a background color in the first video signal (such as the analog VGA input), and replaces the portion of that first video signal with the second video signal. The time delays of the first video signal and the second video signal may be adjusted so that they reach the monitor screen (by means of an a multiplexer output) at the same time. An alignment detector may attempt to align two known signals (such as a VGA sync signal and a signal generated for this purpose), and may adjust a set of time delays in the analog chromakey mixer until the time difference between the first and second video signals falls below a threshold.

Active Electronic Mail

US Patent:
6542923, Apr 1, 2003
Filed:
Aug 21, 1997
Appl. No.:
08/918698
Inventors:
Julien T. Nguyen - Saratoga CA
Assignee:
Planet Web, Inc. - Redwood Shores CA
International Classification:
G06F 1516
US Classification:
709206
Abstract:
The invention provides a method and system for formatting electronic mail for transmission, in which electronic mail messages include the operational results of one or more applets. An electronic mail client creates an electronic mail message using one or more applets, each of which may operate to actively receive, transform, and display information to be presented with the electronic mail message. At or near a time when the electronic mail message is formatted for transmission, editable program code for the applets is removed, and any dynamic links between the applets are broken. The electronic mail message made available to the receiver can thus include active elements, but any applets which are received are not editable by the receiver.
