Disc Clamp Employing Resilient Cone For Spreading Balls

US Patent:
4958839, Sep 25, 1990
Filed:
Jul 12, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/217875
Inventors:
Nahum Guzik - Mountain View CA
Vinod Rao - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Guzik Technical Enterprises, Inc. - San Jose CA
International Classification:
B23B 3140
G11B 2504
US Classification:
279 2R
Abstract:
A ball-type clamping mechanism for clamping computer hard disks in a disk tester for accurate measuring of the disk's parameters comprises a cup-shaped support (10) which is installed on a rotating part of the tester and serves to support a computer hard disk (20) which rests on the upper surface of the support. The support has a cylindrical opening (12) with a diameter equal to or slightly greater than the diameter of the disk opening. Slidingly inserted into the support (10) is a cylindrical retainer (26) which carries clamping balls (28) uniformly spaced from each other in a circumferential direction and located in recesses (30) formed in the side wall of the retainer. The balls have a diameter larger than the side wall of the retainer (26). A pull rod (40) passes through the central opening in the bottom wall of the support and carries a clamping cone (42) which is made from a resilient material softer than the material of the balls (28). When the rod is pulled down, a conical surface (50) of the clamping cone (42) pushes the balls radially outwardly into contact with the inner periphery of the hard disk, so that the disk is clamped.

Adjustable Head Loading Apparatus

US Patent:
5875074, Feb 23, 1999
Filed:
May 30, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/866501
Inventors:
Bin-Lun Ho - Los Gatos CA
Vinod K. Rao - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Quinta Corporation - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G11B 554
G11B 2121
US Classification:
360105
Abstract:
A data storage system includes one or more individual ramp faces for each to slidably receive the free end of a tab member connected to one of one or more transducer heads mounted on a head actuator assembly. Each head is disposed to fly in data transfer relationship adjacent to a respective rotating disk surface. Each ramp face is disposed on one of one or more individually adjustable ramp members connected to ramp mounting means. The ramp mounting means, the actuator assembly, heads and the disks are mounted on a rigid base in cooperating relationship. Head actuator assembly positioning means for moving the heads along the disk surfaces positions each head with respect to the corresponding disk surface so the respective tab is in sliding contact with the associated ramp face when the head is to be lifted from the related disk surface. The respective ramp face is arranged so that the corresponding head will be lifted safely from the disk surface to at least a predetermined parking distance as the free tab end slides outward along the respective ramp face. Multiple individual ramp face adjusting means is provided to enable multi-disk/head systems to have minimal wasted disk surface and minimum disk to disk spacing for given actuator/head geometry by adjusting the position of each ramp face with respect to each related head and tab when the actuator positioning means positions the heads at a maximum outer data transfer radius or when the positioning means positions the heads at a minimum disk to head safe displacement spacing.

The location at which each ramp 166 receives the tab member 160 is individually adjustable. Each head 130 is disposed to fly in data transfer relationship adjacent to a respective rotating disk 108.

Magnetic Head And Disc Tester Employing Pivot Arm On Linearly Movable Slide

US Patent:
4902971, Feb 20, 1990
Filed:
Sep 14, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/244718
Inventors:
Nahum Guzik - Mountain View CA
Vinod K. Rao - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Guzik Technical Enterprises, Inc. - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G01R 3312
G01R 3100
G11B 555
G11B 2108
US Classification:
324212
Abstract:
A magnetic head and disc tester imitates motions of the head on a hard disc drive and comprises a stationary base (22), a slide mechanism (24) which can be installed in any required position on the base (22) with respect to a center of rotation of a magnetic disc (D). The disc (D) is rotatingly supported by a spindle unit (42) fixed to the stationary base (22). A magnetic head (52) to be tested is attached to the end of an arm (16) which is pivotally supported on a slide (36) of the slide mechanism. The angular position of the longitudinal axis of the magnetic disc with respect to a tangent to a given track of magnetic disc (52) , i. e. , a skew angle, can be adjusted and the head can be fixed in the adjusted position. For measuring the parameters of the head or the disc, the slide (36) is moved linearly and carries the magnetic head over the disc in a linear direction, the head being installed at a required skew angle by means of the above-mentioned angular adjustment. Thus, instead of rotary motion of the head with respect to the disc tracks, it is moved linearly, but maintains the same skew angle as on the disc drive.

Data Storage System Having A Positive Actuator Latching Assembly

US Patent:
6147841, Nov 14, 2000
Filed:
Oct 7, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/167773
Inventors:
Vinod K. Rao - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Seagate Technology, Inc. - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 554
G11B 2122
US Classification:
3602562
Abstract:
A multiple disk drive storage system includes a latch assembly for positively latching a head positioning actuator arm when the head is positioned on a load/unload mechanism at the outer perimeter of the disks. Latching and unlatching cycles of the latch assembly are effected by interaction of the actuator arm motion and a latch arm retention magnet structure. In the latch position, the actuator arm is mechanically captured by a hook shaped latch head at one end of the movable latch arm, so that, even in a power off condition the actuator arm is positively latched by the combination of the actuator arm motion limitations, the latch head shape, the latch arm motion limitations and a bias spring urging the hooked latch head into a permanent, static latch with the actuator arm. The opposite end of the latch arm is provided with a magnetic mass which is attracted and held by the retention magnet. This magnet when the activated when the actuator arm is driven from a latching position toward a pre-reset position preparatory to releasing or unlatching the actuator arm.
