Rear Pressure Control And Dynamic Rear Proportioning In A Vehicle Brake System

US Patent:
7010411, Mar 7, 2006
Filed:
Jul 21, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/624056
Inventors:
James R. Bond - Centerville OH, US
Daniel N. Borgemenke - Springboro OH, US
Matthew A. Cukovecki - New Carlisle OH, US
David F. Reuter - Beavercreek OH, US
William F. Borchers - Beavercreek OH, US
Jeffrey T. Vondervellen - Centerville OH, US
Jerry L. Newton - Richmond IN, US
Michael J. Check - Ann Arbor MI, US
Joseph A. Elliott - Plymouth MI, US
Assignee:
Delphi Technologies, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
B60T 7/12
US Classification:
701 78, 701 71, 303167
Abstract:
An apparatus and method are provided for operating a pump-less rear wheel anti-lock brake system of a vehicle using speed sensors on at least one front and one rear wheel, to provide a true dynamic rear proportioning (DRP) function, and to significantly enhance braking performance in rear wheel anti-lock mode through better management of the volume of pressurized fluid supplied by the master cylinder using rear pressure control (RPC).

Park Brake Apparatus For Vehicle Electric Brake

US Patent:
5785157, Jul 28, 1998
Filed:
Mar 27, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/828011
Inventors:
Curtis Albert Scott - Beavercreek OH
William Frank Borchers - Beavercreek OH
Gustavus Pearl Bock - Bellbook OH
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F16D 6527
US Classification:
188156
Abstract:
A park brake apparatus for a vehicle electric brake comprises an electric motor having a rotational output shaft coupled to a brake mechanism. Rotational movement of the electric motor in a first direction causes application of brake force in the brake mechanism and rotational movement of the electric motor in a second direction opposite the first direction causes release of brake force in the brake mechanism. An armature for the electric motor includes a plurality of radially extending armature arms. A solenoid has a plunger movable between extended and retracted positions. In the retracted position, the plunger is free of the radially extending armature arms and the armature spins free of the plunger. In the extended position, the plunger engages the radially extending armature arms, locking the armature in place and maintaining a park brake state.

Brake System Control

US Patent:
5927832, Jul 27, 1999
Filed:
May 9, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/854252
Inventors:
Gary Chris Fulks - Dayton OH
William Dale Cornwell - Beavercreek OH
William Frank Borchers - Beavercreek OH
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B60T 842
US Classification:
303167
Abstract:
A brake system control apparatus comprising: a fluid brake system including a master cylinder containing a hydraulic fluid having a hydraulic pressure, a hydraulic pump having an output hydraulically coupled to the master cylinder, a motor coupled to and providing motive force to the hydraulic pump, a current sensing device coupled to the motor and providing an output signal indicative of electric current through the motor; and an electronic controller coupled to the current sensing device comprising a first sampler taking a first sample of the output signal a first time period after a start up of the motor, a second sampler taking a second sample of the output current a second time period after start up of the motor and a divider for determining a ratio of the first and second samples wherein the ratio is indicative of a hydraulic pressure in the master cylinder at the start up of the motor.

Floating Electromagnetic Brake System

US Patent:
5775467, Jul 7, 1998
Filed:
Jul 29, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/688696
Inventors:
Erik Forrest Knuth - Columbus OH
Abraham Shawky Farag - Dayton OH
William Frank Borchers - Beavercreek OH
Loren Emil Majersik - Oakwood OH
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B60T 842
H02K 524
US Classification:
188161
Abstract:
An electromagnetic brake system includes a motor having a rotor with a rotatable disk fixed to the rotor and an electromagnetic brake disposed about the disk to selectively prevent rotation of the rotor. The electromagnetic brake is carried on a resilient element so that it is suspended relative to the disk and isolated from the remainder of the system reducing the propagation of structural and airborne noise generated by actuation of the electromagnetic brake.
