Aperture Door And Calibration Source For Spacecraft Remote Sensing Devices

US Patent:
5716030, Feb 10, 1998
Filed:
Feb 6, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/596047
Inventors:
Carlo F. LaFiandra - New Canaan CT
William M. Rappoport - Weston CT
George R. Huse - Danbury CT
Edward F. Zalewski - Sandy Hook CT
Assignee:
Hughes Aircraft Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
B64G 100
US Classification:
244158R
Abstract:
A spacecraft telescope door (10) adapted for use with remote sensing devices requiring optical and infrared calibration. The door (10) includes a first calibration surface (24) disposed on a first panel (14) for providing a radiant temperature reference for infrared calibrations. A second calibration surface (26) is disposed on a second panel (12) for providing an absolute radiance reference for optical calibrations. A panel hinge (16) controls the relative position of the panels (12,14) with respect to each other, and an aperture hinge (20) controls the relative position of the panels with respect to the aperture (28). In a specific embodiment, the first surface (24) is painted with chemglaze Z306, a highly emissive paint with a low reflectance for facilitating infrared calibration. The second surface (26) is painted with YB71, a diffuse reflective paint for facilitating optical calibration. In the illustrative embodiment, the panel hinge (16) and the aperture hinge (20) are motorized for controlling the relative orientation of the panels (12,14) and the aperture (28).

Image Tube With Conditioned Input Screen

US Patent:
4147950, Apr 3, 1979
Filed:
Apr 4, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/784207
Inventors:
James R. Caraher - Stamford CT
William M. Rappoport - Westport CT
Donald F. DeCou - West Redding CT
William C. Deits - Huntington CT
Assignee:
The Machlett Laboratories, Inc. - Stamford CT
International Classification:
H01J 6124
H01J 6128
H01J 3902
US Classification:
313181
Abstract:
An image intensifier tube comprising a sealed envelope having therein means for controllably liberating oxygen within the envelope, and an input screen including an oxygen conditioned layer of fluorescent material and an overlying layer of photoemissive material which may be oxidized to improve the photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of the input screen. A method of improving the conversion efficiency of an image intensifier tube input screen including the steps of exposing a layer of fluorescent material to oxygen prior to the deposition of an overlying layer of photoemissive material, and subsequently exposing the layer of photoemissive material to oxygen, if desired, after the tube envelope has been sealed.

Segmented Multiplexer For Spectroscopy Focal Plane Arrays Having A Plurality Of Groups Of Multiplexer Cells

US Patent:
5354980, Oct 11, 1994
Filed:
Jun 17, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/077973
Inventors:
William Rappoport - Weston CT
Edward Zalewski - Sandy Hook CT
Peter Silverglate - Monroe CT
Assignee:
Hughes Aircraft Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
H01J 4014
US Classification:
2502081
Abstract:
A focal plane array employing a segmented multiplexer having differing unit cell capacitances and amplifiers in respective segments of the multiplexer. The segmented multiplexer accommodates and processes the maximum expected signal at differing illumination levels without saturation and provides for optimized noise levels in each of its segments. The focal plane array includes an array of detectors and an array of multiplexer cells respectively coupled thereto. The array of detectors comprises a plurality of groups of detector elements that each detect energy in a predetermined spectral region. The array of multiplexer cells comprise a plurality of groups of multiplexer cells that are respectively coupled to the plurality of groups of detector elements. Each multiplexer cell includes an integrating capacitor and an amplifier, and the integrating capacitor of each cell in a particular group has a predetermined capacitance whose charge integration capability corresponds to an expected maximum intensity level of radiation in the particular spectral region that is detected by the corresponding detector element in the detector array. The optimization of the characteristics of the integrating capacitor and amplifier provided for optimized detection of the radiation in that spectral region.

Temperature Control Systems

US Patent:
2017029, Oct 12, 2017
Filed:
Apr 12, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/096390
Inventors:
- Charlotte NC, US
William Rappoport - Danbury CT, US
International Classification:
G05D 23/19
H04B 3/54
G05B 15/02
Abstract:
A temperature control system includes a central control system including a central controller that outputs a temperature command signal, and a DC power source configured to output a DC power, wherein the central control system is configured to combine the DC power with temperature command signals to output a modulated power signal on a power line.

Row By Row Adjustable Focal Plane Array For Hyperspectral Imagers

US Patent:
2015010, Apr 23, 2015
Filed:
Feb 28, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/194332
Inventors:
- CHARLOTTE NC, US
William Rappoport - Weston CT, US
Assignee:
GOODRICH CORPORATION - Charlotte NC
International Classification:
H04N 5/243
H04N 5/33
US Classification:
3482291
Abstract:
An imaging device and method of imaging an object is disclosed. The device includes a two-dimensional focal plane including a plurality of rows of pixels. The pixel is configured to measure an intensity of light directed onto the pixel using a gain parameter. A gain adjuster adjusts the gain parameter for a selected row of pixels of the focal plane array independently of a gain parameter of another row of pixels.
