A fiber optic housing and aligning device in accordance with the present invention comprises a housing, a directionally adjustable tubular casing that is mechanically coupled to a wall of the housing, and a collimator disposed within the directionally adjustable tubular casing, wherein the adjustable tubular casing comprises a convex spherical cap surface that mates with a concave seating surface of an opening within the wall and wherein the spherical cap surface may be attached to the housing by laser welding or by epoxy.

Hermetic Lid Seal By Metal Pressing For Fiber Optic Module

US Patent:
7186912, Mar 6, 2007
Filed:
Sep 26, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/671748
Inventors:
William Z. Guan - Union City CA, US
Giovanni Barbarossa - Saratoga CA, US
Assignee:
Avanex Corporation - Fremont CA
International Classification:
H02G 3/08
US Classification:
174 50, 174 17 R, 174520, 174521, 220 32
Abstract:
The invention describes a fiber optic module package which uses a metal-to-metal contact seal between a lid and a module housing. The metal-to-metal contact seal provides a sealing mechanism between the lid and the module housing. The module housing has a knife-shaped edge that can bite into a bottom surface of the lid when pressure is exerted on the lid. In a first embodiment, the module housing has a side slot in which an outer wall of the lid can enter which serves as a holding mechanism between the lid and the module housing. In a second embodiment, the module housing has an interior wall which can be pressed into a curved surface of the lid that serves as a holding mechanism between the lid and the module housing. In a third embodiment, multiple screws are inserted through multiple holes on the lid and into the module housing which serve as a holding mechanism between the lid and the module housing.

Optical Fiber Clamping Apparatus To Hold Fiber Cable While Providing Retractable Distance Across Module Unit

US Patent:
6741784, May 25, 2004
Filed:
Jun 22, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/888301
Inventors:
William Z. Guan - Union City CA
Assignee:
Avanex Corporation - Fremont CA
International Classification:
G02B 600
US Classification:
385135
Abstract:
A fiber routing tray to hold, organize, and route fiber cables from external sources to other optical modules and optical components. The fiber routing tray mechanical device comprises a fiber entry block, fiber channel slot, retention bar with fiber clamps, fiber clamping slots, curved fiber routing fence, and a fiber exit opening. A retention bar with a contoured fiber retention clamps is used to hold fiber cables in place, provide a strain relief to a fiber cable, and distribute uniform clamping force on the fiber cable preventing insertion and return losses. Curved fiber channel slots with a preferable width help route fiber cables and prevent them from overbending. In addition, these fiber channel slots control the extension and retraction distance of the fiber cables during external fiber cable assembly. A curved fiber routing fence help route fiber cables and help prevent them from over-bending and tangling inside of the fiber reel tray. An exit opening allows fiber cables to drop below the fiber tray before the fiber cables are attached to the optical devices and optical modules.
