A device for noninvasive, continuous monitoring of arterial blood pressure for advanced cardiovascular diagnoses. Most of the current noninvasive, continuous blood pressure measurement devices are mechanically intrusive and, therefore, cannot be used for long-term ambulatory monitoring. This new approach requires only simple, noninvasive monitoring devices such as finger photoplethysmographs and an electrical impedance photoplethysmograph (EIP) to monitor the dynamic behavior of the arterial blood flow. In this approach, measured signals from these noninvasive sensors on an arterial segment are integrated to estimate the blood pressure in the segment based on a hemodynamic model. A mathematical model of the arterial blood flow is derived and transformed into a state-space representation. In the modeling, a precise hemodynamic model for the arterial segment on which sensors are located is derived, and combined with relatively simplified models of the upstream and the downstream arterial flows to represent an entire arterial stream. Then, a Kalman filter is designed based on the model and it is shown that the internal variables such as the arterial blood pressure in the arterial segment can be estimated based on the measurements, even though the observability condition of the system may not be met.

An image analysis method designed to identify images in a sequence of images that are statistically different in a pre-selected region of interest. The method is suitable when there is no a priori knowledge of the nature of the interesting images. A reference image is used to identify specific regions of the image that may contain interesting changes (Detect Zone), that will not have interesting changes, but can be used to assess image quality (Veto zone), and an unanalyzed region (Ignore zone). To improve the spatial sensitivity, the Detect and Veto zones can be divided into specific cells. The analysis may also be performed on compressed data and another method automatically classifies a cell as either in the Detect zone or Ignore zone. The sensitivity can be further improved by removing periodic feature variation prior to the statistics calculation.

The invention provides a simple and convenient strategy for reducing the dimensions of organic micro- and nanostructures on metal surfaces. By varying electrochemical desorption conditions, organic structures patterned by Dip-Pen Nanolithography or any of the micro-contact printing procedures can be gradually desorbed in a controlled fashion. The electrochemical desorption is initiated at the exterior of the feature and moves inward as a function of time. The desorption process and adsorbate desorption are modified and controlled as a function of substrate morphology, adsorbate head and tail groups, and electrolyte solvent and salt. Different nanostructures made of different adsorbates can be miniaturized based upon judicious selection of adsorbate and supporting electrolyte.

A tilted mirror may also be placed directly underneath the transparent tread in order to reflect the bottom view images to the side where they are captured by a high-speed camera.
