Compression Relief Section

US Patent:
6351919, Mar 5, 2002
Filed:
Jul 1, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/610071
Inventors:
Yu Lin - Blue Bell PA
Daniel C. Ziegler - Millersville PA
William J. Platt - Aston PA
Assignee:
Worthington Armstrong Venture - Malvern PA
International Classification:
E04B 906
US Classification:
5250607, 5250606, 5250608, 522206
Abstract:
A compression relief section in a beam in a grid for a suspended ceiling that permits controlled collapse of the section during a fire, whereby the ceiling is kept relatively intact. The section has a channel formed from the web portion of the beam, and a crushed bulb with a hump, along with a flange, that fold from compression forces, while resisting such forces. There is no interference between the folding portions and the ceiling panels, or drywall, when the section collapses.

Main Beam Connection

US Patent:
6523313, Feb 25, 2003
Filed:
Mar 6, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/800416
Inventors:
Yu Lin - Blue Bell PA
William J. Platt - Aston PA
Assignee:
Worthington Armstrong Venture - Malvern PA
International Classification:
E04B 200
US Classification:
5250606, 5250602, 5250608
Abstract:
An end-to-end connection for main beams in a ceiling grid for a suspended ceiling. A connector is formed at the end of a beam by combining a clip, fastened to the beam, with a configuration in the end of the beam. The connections are engaged to form a connection. The connection can be disengaged and reengaged.

Hook Connector With Plastic Fire Relief

US Patent:
7520095, Apr 21, 2009
Filed:
May 17, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/130529
Inventors:
William J. Platt - Aston PA, US
Yu Lin - Blue Bell PA, US
Assignee:
Worthington Armstrong Venture - Malvern PA
International Classification:
E04B 9/08
E04C 2/02
US Classification:
52232, 5250607, 525731, 52664, 52DIG 5
Abstract:
The invention relates to a right-angle connection in the grid of a suspended ceiling, between inverted T-beams having a vertical web extending between a bulb at the top and flanges at the bottom. A connector on the end of a cross beam hooks into a slot in the web of a main beam. The connector has a plastic encasement that forms abutments about a metallic core. The abutments position the connector within the slot in the web, and prevent further entry of the connector into the slot, under normal conditions. The plastic abutments melt away during a fire, so that the beam can expand longitudinally into the slot to relieve stresses in the beam, without the beam buckling. Ridges on the bottom of the metallic core that engage the web at the bottom of the slot, prevent pullback of the connector from the slot, during a fire, to prevent the ceiling from sagging or drooping.

Stab-In Connector With Expansion Relief

US Patent:
7661236, Feb 16, 2010
Filed:
Sep 23, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/947976
Inventors:
William J. Platt - Aston PA, US
Daniel C. Ziegler - Millersville PA, US
Yu Lin - Blue Bell PA, US
Assignee:
Worthington Armstrong Venture - Malvern PA
International Classification:
E04B 9/08
E04B 9/12
E04B 9/18
E04B 9/20
US Classification:
5250606, 5250608, 5250607, 525061
Abstract:
A V-shaped indent is formed in a stab-in connector for a suspended ceiling grid. The indent forms a vertical bend line. In a fire, the connector bends along the vertical bend line to permit a cross beam in the grid to expand while keeping the grid intact, and thus capable of continuing to support the panels.

Stab-In Connector

US Patent:
7926238, Apr 19, 2011
Filed:
Jan 9, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/754323
Inventors:
Brett W. Sareyka - West Chester PA, US
Yu Lin - Blue Bell PA, US
William J. Platt - Aston PA, US
Assignee:
Worthington Armstrong Venture - Malvern PA
International Classification:
E04B 9/10
E04B 9/34
US Classification:
5250606, 5250607, 525061, 5250609
Abstract:
A stab-in connector that locks with an opposing identical connector, through a slot in the main beam of a suspended ceiling grid. The connector has a straight locking latch that is cantilevered from a bend at a base of the connector. The bend is in the form of an arc. The bend forms a pivot for the latch. Contact between the cantilevered straight locking latch and the side of the slot is delayed as the connector is being stabbed into the slot. During the delay, the connectors are positioned within the slot, and relative to each other, so that substantially less force is needed than the force that was necessary to engage prior art stab-in connectors into locking position.

Multi-Directional Beam For A Drywall Ceiling Soffit Related Application

US Patent:
2020037, Dec 3, 2020
Filed:
Aug 20, 2020
Appl. No.:
16/998442
Inventors:
- Malvern PA, US
Yu Lin - Blue Bell PA, US
Jeff Markley - Middle River MD, US
Jason Robbins - East Earl PA, US
Sebastien Place - Chester Springs PA, US
Joshua L. Neal - Phoenixville PA, US
Assignee:
Worthington Armstrong Venture - Malvern PA
International Classification:
E04B 9/06
E04B 9/04
Abstract:
A straight beam made for use in a suspended horizontal drywall ceiling. The beam is modified so that it can be bent in multiple directions to multiple predetermined angles. The beam has a web connecting two top flanges to two bottom flanges. A notch in the web extends through either the top or bottom flanges dividing the beam into a first side and a second side. The first side and the second side may each contain a pocket angled away from an outward face of the web forming a cutout having a locking edge and optionally a protuberance projecting out in the same direction as the pocket. Furthermore, the first side and the second side may optionally each contain an indentation projecting outward from the web in a direction opposite the spring pocket. As a result, when the beam is bent to the desired predetermined angle the locking edge or indentation may engage with the protuberance locking the angle in place. A soffit may then be constructed with drywall hung therefrom.

Splice Plate With A Cam Lock

US Patent:
2020034, Nov 5, 2020
Filed:
Mar 27, 2020
Appl. No.:
16/831911
Inventors:
- Malvern PA, US
Joshua L. Neal - Phoenixville PA, US
Yu Lin - Blue Bell PA, US
Daniel R. Diamondstone - Philadelphia PA, US
Assignee:
Worthington Armstong Ventures - Malvern PA
International Classification:
E04B 9/10
E04B 9/06
Abstract:
A splice plate for joining and aligning extruded trim strips used in suspended ceiling islands and fascias. The splice plate has at least one cam lock connected to a base plate by a fastener. The fastener passes through an aperture in the cam lock and an aperture formed by a projection in the base plate that projects a distance from the face of the base plate. To prevent deformation of the trim strips, the cam lock and base plate may each include bend lines forming an obtuse angle wherein the obtuse angle of the cam lock is less than the obtuse angle of the base plate.
