Flat-Sided Fluid Dispensing Device

US Patent:
6367925, Apr 9, 2002
Filed:
Feb 28, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/514760
Inventors:
Ting Chen - Richardson TX
Donald J. Hayes - Plano TX
Assignee:
MicroFab Technologies, Inc. - Plano TX
International Classification:
B41J 336
US Classification:
347109, 347 38
Abstract:
A low cost digitally operated dispenser apparatus and method of operation and construction is obtained by combining flat sided, preferably rectangular tubular capillary tube having an orifice, with a flat elongated strip of piezoelectric material. Microdroplets are dispensed from an internal chamber within the capillary tube, or a separate feed supply, upon application of voltage pulses through electrodes connected to conductive layers on the piezoelectric material. The piezoelectric strip may be parallel to the flat capillary tube or perpendicular to it. On a variation, a fixture can be used to improve performance in combination with the capillary tube and piezoelectric strip. A standoff strip allows the piezoelectric operator to be thermally isolated from a flat rectangular capillary tube.

Method For Producing A Fiber Optic Switch

US Patent:
6642068, Nov 4, 2003
Filed:
May 3, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/138059
Inventors:
Donald J. Hayes - Parker TX, 75002
Ting Chen - Richardson TX, 75081
W. Royall Cox - Plano TX, 75093
International Classification:
H01L 2100
US Classification:
438 21, 438 24
Abstract:
A method for forming a micro-optical switch component includes providing a semiconductor substrate having a surface. An opto-electronic device is integrated into the semiconductor substrate at a site. A pedestal of microlens material is formed on the semiconductor substrate surface at the site of the opto-electronic device. The pedestal extends from the semiconductor substrate surface and has a top surface spaced apart from the semiconductor substrate surface. A print head is provided and contains an optical fluid which is hardenable and capable of serving as a micro-optical element. The printhead includes an orifice from which micro-droplets of the optical fluid are ejected in response to control signals. Optical fluid is deposited onto the top surface of the pedestal to thereby form a micro-optical element on the pedestal.

Electrodes With Multilayer Membranes And Methods Of Making The Electrodes

US Patent:
6746582, Jun 8, 2004
Filed:
May 11, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/854310
Inventors:
Adam Heller - Austin TX
Ting Chen - Austin TX
Keith A. Friedman - Austin TX
Assignee:
TheraSense, Inc. - Alameda CA
International Classification:
G01N 27327
US Classification:
20440306, 20440305, 422 57, 427 213
Abstract:
A sensor including a sensing layer is disposed over an electrode or an optode and a layer-by-layer assembled mass transport limiting membrane disposed over the sensing layer. The membrane includes at least one layer of a polyanionic or polycationic material. The assembled layers of the membrane are typically disposed in an alternating manner. The sensor also optionally includes a biocompatible membrane.

Miniature Biological Fuel Cell That Is Operational Under Physiological Conditions, And Associated Devices And Methods

US Patent:
7368190, May 6, 2008
Filed:
May 1, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/427113
Inventors:
Adam Heller - Austin TX, US
Nicholas Mano - Austin TX, US
Hyug-Han Kim - Chungnam, KR
Yongchao Zhang - Austin TX, US
Fei Mao - Fremont CA, US
Ting Chen - Austin TX, US
Scott Calabrese Barton - New York NY, US
Assignee:
Abbott Diabetes Care Inc. - Alameda CA
International Classification:
H01M 8/16
US Classification:
429 2, 435189
Abstract:
A fuel cell is provided with an anode and a cathode. The anode is in electrical communication with an anode enzyme and the cathode is in electrical communication with a cathode enzyme. The anode enzyme is preferably an oxidase or a dehydrogenase. The cathode enzyme is a copper-containing enzyme, such as a laccase, an ascorbate oxidase, a ceruloplasmine, or a bilirubin oxidase. Preferably, the cathode enzyme is operable under physiological conditions. Redox polymers serve to wire the anode enzyme to the anode and the cathode enzyme to the cathode. The fuel cell can be very small in size because it does not require a membrane, seal, or case. The fuel cell can be used in connection with a biological system, such as a human, as it may operate at physiological conditions. By virtue of its size and operability at physiological conditions, the fuel cell is of particular interest for applications calling for a power source implanted in a human body, such as a variety of medical applications.

Carbon Electrode Surface For Attachment Of Dna And Protein Molecules

US Patent:
7687234, Mar 30, 2010
Filed:
Dec 13, 2004
Appl. No.:
11/011265
Inventors:
Ting Chen - Cedar Park TX, US
Xing Yang - San Diego CA, US
R. Erik Holmlin - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
GeneOhm Sciences, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
C12Q 1/68
C12M 1/34
C12M 3/00
C01B 31/00
C01B 31/04
US Classification:
435 6, 4352871, 4352872, 423414, 423448
Abstract:
Methods for conducting an assay to detect nucleic acid hybridization are disclosed. In particular, the fabrication of a carbon electrode suited to nucleic acid hybridization detection is described. In some preferred embodiments, a micro array of carbon electrodes is constructed using photolithography. The final step in the photolithography process involves developing a solder mask with an alkaline solution. The alkaline solution oxidizes the carbon surface producing surface carboxylic acid groups. The surface carboxylic acid groups are reacted with EDC or DCC and NHS to produce NHS esters. Immobilization of NEUTRAVIDIN onto the electrode surface is effected by reaction with the surface NHS ester groups. A biotinylated probe DNA molecule is then attached to the electrode via binding between the biotin group and the immobilized NEUTRAVIDIN. The resulting electrode can be used to detect hybridization between the probe DNA and complementary target DNA.
