Intelligent Brake Light System

US Patent:
2007000, Jan 11, 2007
Filed:
Aug 30, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/213709
Inventors:
Mehdi Ahmadian - Blacksburg VA, US
International Classification:
B60Q 1/40
US Classification:
340476000
Abstract:
A brake light system includes a brake light having at least two brake indicating modes. The brake light system also includes a controller for monitoring a braking condition and a driving condition. The controller determines which one of the brake indicating modes the brake light displays based on the braking condition and the driving condition.

Self-Steering Railway Truck

US Patent:
5746135, May 5, 1998
Filed:
Nov 4, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/743060
Inventors:
Mehdi Ahmadian - Blacksburg VA
Laurence William Gray - Kingston, CA
Dean Zeal McGrew - Erie PA
William Anthony Kurtzhals - Erie PA
James Harry Whitehill - Wattsburg PA
Jennifer Lynn Jaramillo - Fuquay-Variena NC
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
B23Q 300
US Classification:
105196
Abstract:
A railway truck includes a frame having a pair of side frames and laterally extending transoms therebetween. A plurality of journal boxes are resiliently suspended from the side frames and support a pair of longitudinally spaced apart end axles extending laterally between the side frames. A pair of longitudinally spaced apart bellcranks are rotatably joined to each of the side frames between the end axles, with each bellcrank having a vertical crankshaft and a crank arm extending outwardly therefrom. A pair of traction links extend longitudinally along each of the side frames, with each link being pivotally joined between respective ones of the journal boxes and the crank arms for carrying tension and compression loads therebetween. A pair of adjoining reaction arms extend longitudinally along each of the side frames, with each reaction arm having a proximal end fixedly joined to a respective one of the crankshafts, and distal ends thereof adjoining each other. The reaction arm distal ends are joined together for carrying lateral reaction loads therebetween upon rotation of the crankshafts while permitting differential longitudinal and pivotal movement between the adjoining distal ends.

No-Jerk Semi-Active Skyhook Control Method And Apparatus

US Patent:
6115658, Sep 5, 2000
Filed:
Jan 4, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/225147
Inventors:
Mehdi Ahmadian - Blacksburg VA
Brian Reichert - Lexington KY
Xubin Song - Blacksburg VA
Steve S. Southward - Apex NC
Assignee:
Lord Corporation - Cary NC
Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties, Inc. - Blacksburg VA
International Classification:
B60G 1708
US Classification:
701 37
Abstract:
A method of controlling a controllable force generator within a controllable suspension system interconnected between a first member M. sub. 1 and a second member M. sub. 2. The method includes the steps of obtaining a first signal (V. sub. abs) representative of the absolute velocity of the first member M. sub. 1, obtaining a second signal (V. sub. rel) representative of the relative velocity between the first and second members, and setting a desired damping force for the generator based upon a control policy which defines a control surface. The control policy includes a preselected gain, an absolute velocity, and a shaping function of relative velocity wherein said control surface exhibits only continuous first derivatives for V. sub. rel *V. sub. abs >0 and wherein the control surface is devoid of any surface discontinuities. This control policy effectively eliminates the jerkiness in certain prior art control methods, such as skyhook.
