Scroll Machine With Overheating Protection

US Patent:
5707210, Jan 13, 1998
Filed:
Oct 13, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/542939
Inventors:
Jeffery D. Ramsey - Englewood OH
Jean-Luc Caillat - Dayton OH
Sunil S. Kulkarni - Fairborn OH
Assignee:
Copeland Corporation - Sidney OH
International Classification:
F04B 4910
US Classification:
417 32
Abstract:
A thermally responsive valve assembly for scroll motor-compressor high temperature protection, which causes a high-side to low-side leak when excessive discharge gas temperatures are encountered, thereby causing the motor protector to trip and de-energize the motor. The valve assembly includes means for ducting the excessive temperature discharge gas to the lower portion of the motor/compressor shell to the motor to circulate the high temperature gas throughout the motor cavity. The excessive temperature discharge gas heats the motor stator and windings which will in turn cause the motor protector to trip and de-energize the motor. A secondary flow passage increases the flow rate or the discharge gas to lower the cycle time of the compressor.

Scroll Machine With Overheating Protection

US Patent:
5527158, Jun 18, 1996
Filed:
Dec 9, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/313067
Inventors:
Jeffery D. Ramsey - Englewood OH
Jean-Luc Caillat - Dayton OH
Sunil S. Kulkarni - Fairborn OH
Assignee:
Copeland Corporation - Sidney OH
International Classification:
F04B 4910
US Classification:
417 32
Abstract:
A thermally responsive valve assembly (134) for scroll motorcompressor high temperature protection, which causes a high-side to low-side leak when excessive discharge gas temperatures are encountered, thereby causing the motor protector (35) to trip and de-energize the motor. The valve assembly (134) includes means motor ducting (200) the excessive temperature discharge gas to the lower portion of the motor/compressor shell (10) to the motor to circulate the high temperature gas throughout the motor cavity. The excessive temperature discharge gas heats the motor stator (20) and windings (32) which will in turn cause the motor protector (35) to trip and de-energize the motor.

Scroll Machine With Overheating Protection

US Patent:
5141407, Aug 25, 1992
Filed:
Oct 1, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/591428
Inventors:
Jeffery D. Ramsey - Dayton OH
Jean-Luc Caillat - Dayton OH
Sunil S. Kulkarni - Fairborn OH
Assignee:
Copeland Corporation - Sidney OH
International Classification:
F04B 2102
US Classification:
417292
Abstract:
A thermally responsive valve arrangement for scroll motor-compressor high temperature protection, which causes a high-side to low-side leak when excessive discharge gas temperatures are encountered, thereby causing the motor protector to trip and deenergize to motor. A unique valve per se is also disclosed.

Scroll Compressor

US Patent:
2016012, May 5, 2016
Filed:
Oct 31, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/529219
Inventors:
- Sidney OH, US
Sunil S. Kulkarni - Springboro OH, US
Assignee:
EMERSON CLIMATE TECHNOLOGIES, INC. - Sidney OH
International Classification:
F04C 29/00
F04C 18/02
Abstract:
A compression mechanism can include a first scroll member, a second scroll member, and an Oldham coupling. The first scroll member can include a base plate. The second scroll member can meshingly engaged with the first scroll member, and include a first radially extending slot. The Oldham coupling can include a ring portion disposed about the base plate and a first radially extending key portion disposed in the first radially extending slot. The ring portion and the key portion can include a pair of upper surfaces and a pair of lower surfaces. At least one pair of upper surfaces or lower surfaces can be substantially coplanar.

Compressor Assembly With Liquid Sensor

US Patent:
2015006, Mar 5, 2015
Filed:
Aug 27, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/470234
Inventors:
- Sidney OH, US
SUNIL S. KULKARNI - Springboro OH, US
RONALD L. VAN HOOSE - Dayton OH, US
International Classification:
F04C 29/02
F04C 29/04
G01F 23/00
US Classification:
418 84, 73295
Abstract:
A compressor may include a shell, a compression mechanism, first and second temperature sensors, and a control module. The shell may define a lubricant sump. The compression mechanism may be disposed within the shell and may be operable to compress a working fluid. The first temperature sensor may be at least partially disposed within the shell at a first position. The second temperature sensor may be at least partially disposed within the shell at a second position that is vertically higher than the first position. The control module may be in communication with the first and second temperature sensors and the pressure sensor and may determine whether a liquid level in the lubricant sump is below a predetermined level based on data received from the first and second temperature sensors.
